Two different engine oil filter sizes?

Hi All,
So I went to Walmart to get a new oil filter for a 96 80 I just picked up. I noticed two different oil filter sizes in the Fram reference book so I bought both.

One is tiny, the othe HUGE by comparison. Both seem to have the same diameter and will probably work, but which one should I use?? I hesitate to install this tiny one.

Here's a pic. Which one should I use?

Neither! Return them and get yourself a real toyota filter. It's the only oil filter designed with the true landcruiser engine specs in mind.

Is there any actual proof of this?

Just stay away from Fram. Wix, Mobil 1, whatever will work just as well as OEM (I am willing to bet OEM is made by one of the leading filter companies). All those 80's in Africa and South America are probably not running OEM oil filters, and probably see 10x's the abuse you put your rig through.
 
To answer your question

The bigger one has more oil capacity, the smaller one will get the oil pressure up faster on start up. Toyota changed from the bigger to the smaller at some point.



The bigger one is easier to change, but makes a bigger mess when you do.

Either will work fine. Especially if you change the oil far more often than the manufacturer recommends as we all do. If you want real data on oil filters rather than just OEM homers try www.bobistheoilguy.com


It would not be unlike Toyota to have made the change because the smaller one takes up less room on the stock shelf and costs some pennies less to manufacture. They claim the stupid no canister type on the Tundra was to reduce waste in the environment. I find that hard to believe since they eliminated recyclable steel and added a little plastic drain thing that will just get thrown away.
 
Check out the classifieds on this site. There is a guy that sells them for a good price. I don't need to give you proof that the OEM parts are always better than aftermarket. This is true 98%+ of the time.

I suppose I'd have to get it from a dealer? Or are there any good sites online to get them?

Actually I prefer the big Bosch, but note Toyota have also moved from the big to the small one!
 
Never use Fram, they suck.
 
Just get a 5 pack of Toyota oil filters off of ebay or amazon. About $5 per filter and forget about it. When you get down to 1 filter, get 5 more. @beno was kind enough to send me 1 of the old giant traditional filters, but for routine use the 90915-YZZD3 will work perfectly well. It's a very nicely made oil filter, made in Thailand, and it comes sealed, with a lubricated gasket. Traditional Toyota goodness.

Don't make a simple problem complicated.

The above comment about startup oil pressure being improved with the smaller size has been my experience too. I use either on my rigs, but I go small given the choice among high quality filters.
 
There are a few casualties of Wix filters on this forum that would argue different...
Yet some are saying it's their top choice. My land cruiser mechanic uses purolator. I dont believe Toyota is making that filter themselves. It seems like everyone on here has such different opinions on little issues
 
I would say the well informed have moved away from WIX, and the well informed and well read on the subject have moved away from WIX and use only Toyota filters. The risk differential is great between Toyota and WIX, while the price differential is minimal.

IMHO, there is nothing magical about a Toyota branded filter. I tend to use Purolator, but have also used Toyota, WIX, etc. in my Land Cruisers for the past 30+ years.
