So I got my truck back with new turbo. Total bill including the unnecessary fuel system purging was around $1000. Sucks, but I consider this a blessing all things considered.

Anyways, so the new turbo seems louder than the old one. Both spool at the same RPM, and seems to have about the same amount of power. But this one seems louder (more whine). At about 2000rpm I can hear it more now, not louder. just more distinct.. At about 3000rpm on the truck the turbo seems louder that before? Could it just be not broken in yet? Its not much louder, but I think it is more than before. Do you think it is just me critically listening to it now (which it very well might be)?

It is still not that loud. It is about as loud as the turbo on Gold Boy's BJ74.

Also does a new turbo need any sort of break in or extra care?
My oil right now has 4500KM's on it. Should I change it right now so the turbo has fresh oil, or run it to normal change? I also run full synthetic. And yes, I ALAWYS give my truck idle down time.

Thanks,
Nick

It's funny that you mention this.. the first day I took my 80 (with fresh ADP reman turbo) I could really hear the turbo whistle on highway grades, it was great.. now it seems barely audible.. so I am either not hearing so well in that frequency anymore or the turbo has quietened down. I gota get onto that 3" high flow exhaust and get that whine back!

keep your ear on it and let us know what you find.

$1000 total is not too bad considering the first estimate..

Nick .. I LOVE .. the turbo sound .. and always after a long trip I love hear very close to exhaust pipe the turbo sound .. ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I had the same experience as 70sguy. After the rebuild (ADP) it seemed louder now I only hear it occasionally.

Nick, one word.... pyrometer!!

It probably wouldn't have saved the turbo from parts coming off but you'd be surprised how long it can take to cool down.
