hi everyone,

i have an landcruiser HJ60, and it already has an dual battery system, but this is not enough for me. i know fitting an battery in the trunk would be the easiest, but i need the trunk for my mini camper thing.

this is how it looks now, it's still far from finished, but i need every cm in the back....

as you can see this is under the hood: (leds at the top)

and this is the dual battery:

But where can i put an other battery?(or two)

greets niels

may I ask why you need so many batteries? It must be pretty special circumstances. One might think that two solid batteries with a good size solar charger would take care of most needs.

If you've moved your spare tire to a rack on the back, the old spare tire location is usable. I have a hinged rack with two group 31 batteries on it for my 4Runner. I placed them in battery boxes to keep the dust and dirt on them down. If you want to do fording of rivers and streams, you can make the battery box have a sealed top and open bottom much like a diving bell. I can also store a couple jerry cans on that rack. I only use it for fuel ones because of the road dust and spray.

The hinges on my rack are just behind the axle and arranged so they don't interfere with the suspension, and exhaust pipe.

hi bogo, that's a good advice, i will place them where my spare tyre use to be. yeah i wanna have some more battery capacity so i can keep my fridge running 24/7 so as my inverter.

200 watts of solar will recharge those two battery's by lunch time depending where you live. If your not keen on solar best get a good 25 amp charger to keep them topped up on grid when there not in use.

Yeah I probably will! But i will be driving quite a bit for the next 3 months so the car will keep them topped up!!
Thnx for the great help!! The spare wheel place is a good place

Hi, i only have the altenator...
Consider a second alternator. Wire it to only charge the new bank of batteries, and use the original alternator for the two under the hood. This gives you an alternator backup, and lowers the load on each alternator. For combining battery banks, get a high current relay you can manually open and close. You could also use a smart combiner to charge in parallel.

Aaa yes that's a good idea, i will put a high current relay in line! And make it work!! Dual alternator sounds a bit to much to me for now...

For just a fridge, you are fine with what you have. No need for more battery power if driving nearly every day.

What loads to you plan to run off the inverter? If it's just phone and lapTop charging, most can be directly charged from 12 volts and avoid the inefficient inverter.

Is an HJ60 24 volts?

hey,
it is an 12v HJ60 (so that makes things easier) and yeah it is laptop, coffee machine etc and also lights. but i also wanna stay somewhere for lake 2 days without the need of running my car.

i decided to go for two more batteries, because i could get 2 120ah deep cycle batts for less than 100 bucks!

You would still be fine except for the coffee maker. Not sure you'll be able to do that even with 2 more batteries, so test it before install.

Very good price on the batteries.

Yeah thnx!! I will try!
Yeah i tough the same on the batteries!

I will keep this post up todate with photos

How big is your inverter ?
The problem will be the alternator wont give them the full charge they require for a long life so consider the 25 amp 5 stage charger you can plug into 110/240 to keep them fully charged.

Yeqh I probably will never fully drain it!!

Should be no problem. For an 80% DOD with an 80% efficient inverter, that is 1.2 hours at a 1500W draw. With other loads on the system, that time is obviously reduced. My little 4 cup coffee pot is only 650W and makes a pot in under 15 minutes. I've been known to plug my engine block heater, 750W, into my inverter to aid starting after cold winter nights. I have two 110Ah deep cycle batteries, and power a hot plate, microwave and toaster oven with them.

I wrestled with the same on my HDJ80, it has 2 batteries for the 24v start, I wanted a leisure battery and inverter too. I decided it needed building into the drawers / camping system though.

these pics are before it was all wired / strapped down.

I've been running 230v powertools happily (drill, grinder, dremel, heat gun, vacuum cleaner) since last August, plus theres a 45A draw Tmax compressor hooked up to it (the battery, its 12v) which gets caned from time to time, those rear spots, and Im also getting an electric kettle, toaster & fridge cooler to live onboard for trips. I will add a decent solar panel soon too

There is no room for another alt int he 2H setup on HJ60 .. unless you get rid of your AC compressor .. behind the air box if you move your washer bottle you can make some space ( if factory ) and moving your PS reservoir front and up ..

update, blew a 100A fusable link at the weekend, running a hairdryer of all things.. (heatgun use obvs :) )
