I don't have a 4 runner or Hilux, but I have a very similar 4x4 van. It comes with the G52 trans and the 2L engine.

Some questions:

1: Can any engine be bolted to a G series trans if it fits the W transmission? (assuming it comes with W transmission bell housing)
I read they could be interchanged right? Is that for all of them? Regardless of G52 or W59? Correct?

2: Marlin crawlers table shows output shafts
Transmission Gear Ratio Chart | Marlin Crawler, Inc.
this is the number of splines for the connection between transmission and engine? or transmission and driveshaft?

3: Right now I have a G52. Regardless of engine choice, if I would swap to a W transmission would I need to change someting about the driveshafts? Changing the connection may not be so bad, but if the length is different, it is more work.

4: Same question for R150 transmission, what changes would be needed. Perhaps they are much bigger?

5: does anybody know if the 3RZ is much taller than the 2RZ? reason for this question is, my van was also shipped with 2RZ. So if the 3RZ is not much higher, it would fit too.
I just found out, throug toyodiy.com, that the bellhousing for 3RZ and 2RZ are the same, for G55 and W59 transmissions. So I should be able to bolt an 3RZ to my G52, correct?

I know that the G52 is not the strongest transmission out there. But it's a camper van, so maybe it only does 4000 miles in a year, and I'm not racing this van :D

Thanks in advance

Most logical would be to go for the 3RZ if it fits. 2RZ fits, so height can be the only difference I think.
3RZ is pretty rare in Europe though. However, some of the later (RWD only) Hiace vans came with 3RZ as a petrol version. They are not so sexy as a 4runner or landcruiser, and nobody here wants a petrol van, so if I wait I should see something pass.
2RZ would be more easy and affordable, but I think I can use the power in those few cases I need it.

And internet learned me that even a 1UZ would fit in this van :p
And with an aftermarket adapter, I guess I could fit it to my G52 gearbox. Some people did that, but you shouldn't drive to much, and to fast haha.

Also, the 2L right now is pretty slow, but it gets me everywhere, also offroad. But sometimes power is going to be an issue. When the van gets lifted soon, I can do some other stuff in which I can use the power. But we will see how it goes.

Off the top of my head.

I believe the L-series engine has a different bolt pattern than the 20/22R engines. So the W-series bellhousing off a 22R will not bolt to the L-series engine.

I believe the W-series and G-series transmissions are interchangeable between their respective bellhousings. (I would double check this.) This would allow you to bolt the W-series tranny to your G-series bellhousing.

The R-series transmissions are a different beast. They have a different bolt pattern than the W-series, so a R-series transmission will not bolt to a W-series bellhousing. There is a bellhousing out there that will allow a R-series transmission to be bolted to a 22R engine (turbo bellhousing).

I will bet the spline count you are referring to on Marlin's website refers to the output/input for the transfercase (21 vs. 23 splines).

I don't believe a W-series bellhousing off a 22RE will bolt to a 2/3RZ engine (correct me if I'm wrong, gents). But, as I recall the W59 out of a 2/3RZ will bolt to a bellhousing on a 22RE. The W56 and W59 are interchangeable as long as the bellhousing matches the engine. It would be important for me to know if the bolt pattern on a 2/3RZ is the same as the 22R. But, I don't think they are.

Of course, I could be full of poop, too.

W56 won't bolt to a 3rz unless you have the w59 bellhousing. Go check Marlin crawler's forum as they have a huge thread about 3rz swaps

Thanks for the info.

Perhaps I was not to clear. At this point it seems best to check my options regarding keeping the G52. Because it would make everything less time consuming and less costly. The 3RZ makes sense, but it is rare and when I find it, I will not find it with a 4wd gearbox probably.

So if I would find a 3RZ that bolts to any W transmission, I guess I can bolt it to a G transmission as well. The parts system shows me bell housing is same for W59 and G55, but if it fits to a G55 I guess it will fit to a G52 as well?

There is also a 3VZ-E engine here, but I don't think it is worth it. It is probably a lot of hassle. And the RZ engines are more on the torque, closer to a diesel. With the 3VZ I would also need some kind of special bell housing, and I would need to check if it would even fit in the engine room. But I guess, if a 1UZ fits...

The engine room is somewhat spacy, but not so easy and not unlimited in height. The reason, you sit on top of the engine :P

Just to give an idea about the engine compartment. In this case a V8 which was only standard in the rare ambulance version...
