Hey guys,

I'm changing my clutch today and am slowly moving through the directions in the Toyota repair manual.

I've got the shift lever out, and removed the transmission cover.

I now need to drain the transmission and transfer case but I don't know how. The manual just tells you to "raise vehicle and drain out transmission and transfer" . I presume I need to elevate the vehicle so the transfer case fluid will drain. Any feedback would be appreciated. EDIT: You don't need to jack the vehicle up. Remove t case and transmission fill plugs first to prevent them from sticking. The remove the respective drain plugs.

EDIT: Labels now correct

Thank you Matt - I fixed the picture above so it is correct. I've got them both draining and am moving on to the front and rear propeller shaft removal. I'll look into those allen key bolts as well. The t-case fill bolt is shot.

Being that you are in Portland. Get ahold of Cascade Cruisers, good bunch to wheel with.

I don't think you need to lift the vehicle to drain the fluids, as long as you can fit underneath. With my modest 33" tires and OME lift I can almost sit up underneath the truck. When changing my clutch, I didn't need to lift the truck either. The only lift was required to remove the transmission/transfer case from under the truck when I was resealing the transfer case.

The last pic s correct. I think it might be too late, but it is good practice to take off the fill plugs before you pull the drain plugs. You dont want them to be stuck, and strip out after you have already drained the fluid. You would have no way to refill without some drilling and tapping.

Going good! I had a 197 mile running relay this weekend called Hood to Coast so I was busy. Ran it with Cruisified.

I'm hoping to drop it today. I got the drive lines off and just need to figure out how to disconnect the 4wd/ backup light. Then transfer shift lever comes off and I can drop it. I'm going to try and take more pictures so I can help others. I'll post them when I'm all done.

Thank you for the tips and help!

Very cool - it was a fun race.

So I'm about to drop it, but I'd like to get an opinion on where to place the jack. I have no idea how heavy it is, but I don't want to unbolt it and have it fall off the jack stand.

All of the options seem like it wont sit well on the jack because the transfer case is at a different level than the tranny.

Option 3:????

Also, should I take out all "A" bolts so the support member is taken off? I took out the "B" bolts and screwed them in the bottom of the nut so I wouldn't lose them.

The manual says to take out the 4 bolts in the lower left diagram but it doesn't seem necessary. Also, not sure if I need to take the exhaust pipe off.

just have to be a capt. obvious for a monent.
you need to support the rear of the engine once you remove that rear mount, from the tranny, in order to remove the tranny.

Ok, got it out. Not I'm looking at how to get the clutch out since I have the bell housing in the way. I thought I read somewhere that the bell housing doesn't have to come off. And ideas of how to get the clutch/ flywheel out from here?

Also, I took all the bolts out of the oil pan and it doesn't want to budge. I was thinking of tapping it with a rubber mallet.

Loosen the bolts that hold the pressure plate one at a time, then rotate the flywheel and do the next one, and so on and so on. Make sure you hold it in place till the last one comes out or it will fall out or move around on you. I do this by putting the clutch alighnment tool in the grooves before I start unbolting. Second pair of hands for a first timer might not be a bad idea.

As for the oil pan, if you have a scissor jack, put a piece of 2X4 against the pan side, and apply pressure to the pan. Not cranking it till it breaks free, but just enough to keep the jack horizontally up there, and pretty soon you will hear it let go and the jack will be loose, and you can remove the pan.

Many ways to do it. Try what works best for you.

Manual kerosene pump is what is use. The oil is too thick for an electric one.
