Can someone tell me what the gear ratios of the stock transfer case gears are in the 1st gen 4runners? Also, does it matter if its a top shift or forward shift case?

I am trying to figure out if a doubler will effect on road, 2wd speeds/mileage. My feeling is (let me know if i have it wrong) that if the transfer case has a 1:1 ratio for high and 1:???? (dont know yet, please fill me in) for low that when in 2wd on the highway my gearing at the output would be effectively "stock" even though it was doubled.

In other words if i doubled the truck and both cases were in high, 2wd, then i wouldnt know it other than the nice new shifter sticking out of the floorboard. right?

I looked in FAQ and the only links that i could find that might help appeared to be dead. could be my server at work though.

There's tons of places on the web that will tell you the stock ratios.

But, even with double and triple cases installed, your 2WD ratio is unchanged, as long as all the cases are in Hi range. They all retain 1:1 output. You only get "double reduction" if both cases are in Low range.

Stock transfers are 1:1 high, 2.28:1 low. If you are in H+H your final is 1:1.

Forward shift cases can be converted to top shift. Forward shift cases need to be used with transmissions made for such things. If you have a Gen1 4Runner with the W56 tranny, you will have a top shift TC. If you have a 1984 Gen1 with the G-series tranny I believe you will have a forward shift. If you have a Gen1 4Runner with an R-series tranny (V6 and turbo trucks) it will be forward shift. This is off the top of my head. Check Marlincrawler.com to make sure. If you have an auto ... I have no clue.

HTH.

Gear driven stock TC high range is 2.28:1. Top shift v. forward shift matters if you're going to put a crawl box in. '84-'85 carbed trucks are forward shift, EFI is top shift. But just in case anything was swapped on your truck, the TC will match whatever trans was swapped in (W series trans v. G series v. R series). All this info (and a lot more) is covered in detail on Marlin's site. Great stuff, go take a look, and GL!

He meant "low" range, as "high" range is the 1:1. To answer your specific question - If both cases were in High, the only things you would see different is a tad bit more noise and the 2nd shifter.
