Trail Hitch Tire Carrier?

I had that Bonarue years ago when I had an 89 4Runner lifted and ran 33" tires. Used it in the standard receiver hitch and it stuck out a bit to far but served its purpose for years. Eventually sold it. It was a well made product

after I tried mounting it I realized it would not work with my receiver due to the lock pin would not line up.....and I could see from having it mounted up it was way too far aft for my liking. I was going to just sell it here on mud. It is very sturdy and well built so I started thinking about retaining the design and welding it to the cross member. Its defintely one of a kind.

I haven't yet. Mark has been sick.

I don't want to rush him.

Not sure. I doubt it as most his stuff caters to XJ Cherokees.

Also very interested in how this turns out once you have it installed and operational. Plz include a video of it in action (if possible) along with trail updates (focusing on stability) over time.

Given our tailgates, is this going to rotate parallel to or down-and-away from the rear bumper?

Do you envision this as a permanent spare relocation or do you intend to still leverage the stock spot?

Scratching my head wondering if my Gobi ladder will be in the way but really hoping this thing pans out.

Thx man....

Semi permanent. I will set up the go pro for stability shots. I am anticipating a little wiggle. I can't swallow the price of a bumper just to relocate the tire.

I have an interior mount and it takes up to much room. It will swing straight back parallel to the path of the tail gate. It's a catch22 but I am just excited to have cargo space back. It will never go into the stock location ever again. Worst design on these trucks.

Looking forward to your updates.

I spoke with Mark briefly (nice guy as others have mentioned).
  1. He's not active on any forums - doesn't have the time.
  2. A side-swing is an option provided:
    • he'd probably want to take out the ~5-degree pitch that matches the rear window's slant (avoids clearance issues with the bumper as it rotates down)
    • it might be possible to relocate the attachment to the cross-member off to the passenger side (avoid my Gob ladder) provided the rear bumper is straight (no curve to it) - I won't be back in front of my 80 until next weekend so will have to wait and see before I can do some measurements, etc. Strength of attachment becomes questionable if moving away from the pintle mount.......
Thought I'd share....

Mine is due to be delivered on Monday!!!

Train derailment causing a shipping delay. Fawk.

Tire carrier showed up today. Pictures to follow.

Ok so I have it installed. Pretty straight forward. One big annoyance was the bolts that hold the tire on to the carrier. They have no retainer and are not studs that press on. So mounting the wheel to it is a huge pain in the ass. I am going to get some jam nuts to hold the bolts into place. It made the wheel install way more difficult that necessary. Here are pics:

  1. Nice 80....always good to throw that out there.
  2. So what's the verdict in terms of operations? Up/down - no biggee or lots of bending over and wrestling to get that tire locked back in place?
Thx for posting and sticking with this thread....

Looks really nice. Also looks like you might be able to fit some maxtraxx, rotopax, or something behind it, ect. Could be a good spot!

The plate seems a bit inconvenient if you needed the tire...is there width to place it right beside the tire carrier flange?

I ordered some nuts to hold the bolts in place to alleviate the issue. It's not to bad picking it up. It's really easy to latch as it's very well balanced at the top of the swing radius. Lowering it is easy too. Nice to not have to swing out a gate either.

Yes, how is it? I've always stayed away from things like this for that reason. I like the look of their receiver mounted model, looks like the most inward part is a wedge that you tighten to kill the sway/slop, which is a good eat idea. Just yesterday I was behind a van in the freeway with a cargo basket in the receiver, and watching it flop all over was pathetic, and scary for MX riders as well. Now I need to call these guys, I'd rather have a basic, badass bumper for a few hundred bucks and one of these, than dropping two grand on Slee's bumper! (Sorry guys, the lift kut and front bumper ran me dry in the wallet for a while!) And I need to pick their brains and get one for a 37" tire, if they'll do it hopefully. My guess would be receiver mounted
