The fact that it is his dd has a major bearing on time line for a commutor.
Best immediate option imo, find a slighty/non modded unit as Todd said. I would still keep the old one if you have a place to keep it.

Have a daily driver as one vehicle & a wheelin rig that you can still drive to the trails.
