If your truck came with an airbag, it needs to stay there to pass safety. Airbags are federally mandated safety items, and expecting to pass safety without one is like expecting to pass without seat belts.

A local upholstery shop quoted me $350 to recover mine in whatever color I wanted. That's the route I'd take if new ones are ~$500...

I just rewrapped my wheel with a 60.00 dollar wrap and its not easy its not erfect but it looks perfect and works great.
ill post pics tomoorw ish as I just did it today

I bought a slip on cover @ WallyWorld for about $12 when I got my 80 in 2010. I have replaced it once in 105000 miles. Warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Cheap cover wears out every 5-6 years but no wear to original steering wheel. Works for me.

As for the splines on the wheel idk if they'll line up, but the wheels look indenticle to the likes of the wheels that come one early 90's camry's and avalons. They still seem to be plentiful in bone yards.

TRD Make a steering wheel that fits:

Or there is a Mob in Japan that remake the wheels

TRD Wheels are usually $900+, that refurb wheel would be about $700

i'm interested to hear more about the LS400 > FZJ80 swap, airbag version specifically. direct swap?

Yes. My black LS400 wheel is indistinguishable from either branded FZJ80, aside from it being black. I even found one w/o the wood panels on the rim.

I could post a pic, but it's exactly a 95-97 FZJ80 wheel, right down to the cruise control on RS of the wheel (since that wasn't mentioned by anyone).

I know a guy in Squamish BC with a full base level Camry wheel from late 90's in his LX450 - you need the airbag specific to that wheel, but he said it was a bolt on deal, and the rubber is less work to clean if you have dirty hands from whatever when you go do trails. Splines are the same, and the rubber isn't the cheap kind with soft foam in it.

He did the Camry wheel since he's long legged & it was a easy 1" smaller diameter, so for those over 6' maybe pursue that.

HTH.

I really want one its a pet peeve but after looking at what I did to a leather wheel wrap in 6 months It looks like it would be trashed, I always under the hood, under the truck or the like, I had a land cruiser heaven wheel cuued up to buy last night and withdrew at the last minute(insert sexual reference in 3...2...1............)

^^^^ pulling out early is how we can afford a 80.
Thats exactly how I did ti, no kids no wife my 80 is my baby and my one true love

I know this thread is a little stale, but I put a LS400 in my '95 80 and it fits, but the airbag clip is different. So I had to disconnect it. That is the only problem I have seen. But the wheels are available in the junkyard for ~$50.

I looked up this thread because I was thinking of putting the same wheel in my 1990 VX. I guess the spline is the same? I really like that Tacoma wheel. Has anyone routed all the radio wires through the column? Is that possible? I really miss my radio/phone controls on the wheel.

Did you blow the airbag in your old wheel?

The LC/LX450 bag mounts fine in the LS400 wheel.

IDK about radio, but the LX450 had optional phone controls on the LS of the wheel, just opposite the cruise control.

I think the wires are in the column for that 450 wheel too. At least in my '95. I have a feeling they are not there in the '90.

As for the airbag, my experience is that the Lexus/Toyo bags were different. They fit the same, but the Lexus bag had a different bag connection. It would not clip into my Toyo column so I have never hooked it up. Actually if I remember, I think I just clipped them and twisted them together cause it pissed my off. I hope I never have to find out if it works. :hillbilly:

@LINUS what year LS did you get your wheel from?

I forget TBH - it's from the 1st (only?) gen of LS400's.

It's PN# 45103-50020 based on a stamp on the 10 o'clock spoke.

No mo/yr stamping in the circular 'sundial' style I'm used to. Looked on FR & RR.

The only difference between it & a LX450 one was the cruise arm is slightly more rounded in shape, but plug is same.

any issues installing this wheel? fitment? plugs? or the like? steps?

The only thing that was different on one of mine were the airbag plugs. I just don't remember if it was the LS 400 wheel. But one of the plugs in a Lexus was different than Toyota. Otherwise, it fits exactly the same.
