I left the interior this morning caught the first ferry to duke point and drove down island from Nanaimo. About 580 kilometres of snow driving! Just me the dogs and the plows.

Tried to go walk on the lake but I still have ptsd from falling through along time ago. If hear those pings and twangs from ice contractions. I’m running towards shore like a little sissy girl.

Don’t mess with the ice. It’s not ptsd it’s common sense

I went to see Those three cruisers on Quadra island. The fj40 runs and drives but all frames and bodies are bad. There’s a bj40 and another fj40. Some decent parts for sure. He’ll take 5 grand, but I told him that was kinda high for their condition and location.

It’s above zero here time to wash off all the coarse salt and grit from the interior highways off the undercarriage. I’m too cheep for a car wash also the under spray time is too short. Garden sprinkler is doing double duty.

Coming from a car wash background, I can tell you that aside from a bit more pressure…you nailed it!

Fundamentally worthless. It never ceases to amaze how these poor old trucks are kept and guarded outside in the secret tropical
rust rain forest for decades and when they get to the point of scrap are now worth so much cause collectible.
The guy should pay you to take them away and at least make and save the parts for something besides landfill.

They might be worth 5k to someone. Being on Quadra island is definitely another strike though.

Having parted out a 45, stripped a 40 down for its frame, swapped frames in my 40, and replaced almost the entire 40…

I know what’s involved in making something out of those 3 trucks. It’s unlikely to break even in these parts on them. Plus it’d probably cost $1000+ to get them here from Quadra island. Unless you have a massive car hauler and your time is worth nothing.

I think I’d be better off buying new parts rather than trying to get the things that I’d need off those “40s”. The 45 I bought for $100 was totally worth the asking price… but there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell I’d buy those for anything close to $5000.

Apparently he just sold them all for 3500$. They are being sent to Guatemala to get rebuilt???? buddy says???

They’re probably being bought mostly for their VINs… they may or may not have much of the original truck left when they come back.

Cut Vin out of frame, drill vin tags. Put in Fedex box. 3 NEW restorations coming to USA soon!

Hmmm? Never thought about that angle.

Don't those 200k "icon" trucks all start out with a donor vin tag from a 40 series?

Always struck me as shady they had to scrap a 40 to build one. You'd think that throwing around as much money as they do, they could get their own numbers.
Maybe that's changed, I dunno.

If they are a “new” vehicle they have to meet today’s standards. As a restoration, they only need to meet or exceed the rules of the original vehicle.

Yeah, it's definitely the cheap easy way, which is pretty cheesy for a vehicle that expensive.

There's kit and replica cars around (which is what the icons are) that manage to get registered without an original tag. :meh:

Agreed.

When they first started out they may have been restoring/restomoding… but now there is almost nothing left of the donor truck. Bolting on the hood of a ‘74 Landcruiser doesn’t make it one.
