Toyota Hilux Surf Diesel...

Hey there, I am new to the forum and live in Canada, southern Ontario to be exact. I have been thinking about a 1996-2002 Toyota 4-Runner for a long time as a daily driver.

This is until I saw the Toyota Hilux Surf Turbo Diesel that can be imported from Japan. Equipped with 4X4 and a 3.0L turbo diesel it might just be my dream vehicle come true!!! I wanna find out as much info I can about these trucks before I buy one (still need to save some money). I am really useless with my left hand so an automatic tranny might be the key for me to survive the RHD factor.

I need to know as much as I can about the importing of trucks to Canada. I also need to gather as much info on the actual truck itself, how have people liked these trucks, how do they hold up here in N. America?

I also need the names and links to some reputable importers in Canada that will bring in a good product and stand by it and not rip me off.

All said and done taxes, duties, transfers and evreything else what kinda vehicle am I looking at getting (year, mileage, condition) for $10,000 Canadian funds? Thanks

Im not 100% positive, but i do not think that vehicle was released state side. And as for 10,000$ limit, your kind of limited. you need to talk to importers, taxe rates, etc. before you cand do the math. I would look into getting an older solid axle pickup/surf and doing upgrades to it! Makes a much better end result and you get everything you want!

good luck
:flipoff2:

If you consider importing them from europe you will get lhd also... germany is a good place to find them, mobile.de - Deutschlands größter Fahrzeugmarkt. Suchen, kaufen oder verkaufen Sie Neu- und Gebrauchtwagen is the largest site for used cars.

Here in Norway they are still very expensive! For a rusted one you will have to pay 15000, for a mint condition low mileage maybe as much as 30000usd.

You should check if the engine uses cooling water, if so it is very expensive to fix. I think I would rather import an engine with tranny and everything, the 1KZT engine comes with the R151F tranny and chain driven t-case. When set up properly you should be able to get about 200hp out of it (cooler, adjusted dieselpump, adjustet turbopressure, 3" exhaust)..

As i said, they are common over here... If I forgot something, feel free to let me know! Good luck!

3.0L

Sorry I know I want to get the 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine that came out in the 1993's on. So I guess they are just starting to hit our shores now.

I still would like to gather as much information as I could on the 1993 and newer JDM Hilux Surfs. The 3.0L engine and the reliability, gas mileage, and ease of access to parts and mechanics that can work on it. What have people found with these trucks?? Any links to reviews or write-ups you may have?? I realize they are just hitting N. American shores now but there has to be some knowledge on these. Thanks

The 1KZ-TE (the 3.0L engine) is awesome.

No L series issues to worry about, good power, etc... I have been able to get parts for my 2LT-E (an older and lamer engine than the 1KZ-TE) in the US. What I couldn't get in the US, I got from overseas.

An engine is an engine--any mechanic should be able to work on it. A good repair manual might have to be purchased by you though.

I wish I had a 1KZ-TE instead of a 2LT-E.

Models??

I am trying to understand the model designations for the years of 1993 to 1995 before they switched to the next generation in 96.
I want the 3.0L turbo diesel engine and want to know what order the models went.

I know there is SSR, SSR-X, SSR-X LTD, SSR-G, SSR-G LTD. What models are we likely to see most for import to N. America with the Diesel engine? What do these diff models get you for options and extras? What had power windows, mirrors, sunroof, locks?? Which models came with the recaro seats?? Thanks
