A couple close ups of the Engine Adjust Kit (4 pocket that doesn't have the red points file). I thought it was cool the voltage tester still has the wax on it.

That's not at all like the tool kit that came with my '78 new. It was a zippered bag with the tire iron, a couple of wrenches, a spark plug tool, a screwdriver or two, and the jack handle. That looks like an earlier kit.

Here's my 1978 tool bag with a few battle scars

Agreed.

Well aren't we a bit OCD! This is the tool kit that came with my 1978 FJ40 back in 2011 and I was not the original owner.:flipoff2::hillbilly:
Y'all make it sound like I committed a :censor: crime:hillbilly:

Just pointing out that it's an earlier tool roll, that's all. If you hadn't called it a 1978 tool bag, I wouldn't have bothered to say anything.

Large Tool Roll (early) - OEM (vintage tools)

This is the early (1958-63) version of the large tool roll, designed to hold the 2-piece lug wrench. The early version can be identified by the top #3 and #4 loops that are not aligned. This version includes a Maruki hammer and 6 open-end wrenches with oval handles held by a blue TEQ wrench clip. The adjustable wrench is marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR along with an oval pad near the bottom of the handle. Screwdrivers are marked TOYOTA MOTOR on the shank, the grease pump is marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR and the engine adjust kit green pouch is marked TEQ.

In addition to the lug wrench, the pliers and spark plug wrench are much different from later versions. This pliers has a plain screw, a reinforcing ridge on the jaw, no KTC PAT mark, and curved handles with triangle grips. Later pliers have a slotted screw, U-shaped reinforcement, KTC PAT mark, and re-curved handles with dimpled grips. The spark plug wrench has a thicker wall and a recessed rather than formed end.

This version of the spark plug wrench dates from around 1962, same time frame as the Four Wheeler FJ40 review that included this photo of the tool kit.

There appears to be three versions of the these early, curved handle pliers, this is the second version. Earlier pliers (1958-59) have a much smaller TEQ mark and do not appear to have any reinforcement on the jaw. Slightly later pliers (1963) have a slotted screw, U-shaped reinforcement, dimpled grips, and the KTC M.PAT mark on the back.

This pliers has an unusual "6135" forge mark.

Comparing these pliers to subsequent versions; 2nd from 1963 Large Roll (23mm), 3rd from 1964-65 Large Roll (21mm), 4th from 1969 Large Roll(21mm).

Both the jaw reinforcement and screw type changes with the next version. Re-curved handles are introduced with the Large Roll (21mm).

The KTC patent mark appears on the next and following versions as M.PAT, finally changing to PAT by the last version.

The next version changes to the dimpled grips with the MADE IN JAPAN mark.

Spark plug wrench is marked TOYOTA MOTOR on the front, 20.6 in back, with the horizontal line.

Thanks for all you contribute to this thread. It is one of most enjoyable and informative threads on all of MUD!

wow, the older tools are a lot better quality than the later stuff ... thicker walls on the plug wrench, the grips on the pliers ... nice, and ditto re your work on this thread ... my 78 toolkit is almost done, thanks to your research ...
