Progress this week, rockers are trimmed and the front fenders have been shortened 4 ". I plan to
get some angle iron to put on there to at least make the edge look cleaner.

Put some diagonal braces and a few gussets in the top of the cage.

Now that it's not as cold nights when I get home I'll start with the front axle changes.
Locker and Longs.

I have another BIG project in the works and when I have the parts here I'll post up what's going on.
Have to take a ride to VT first.

No wrenching today. : (
Went shopping instead, usually I can't stand going shopping but this was Cruiser Shopping!
After a 3 hour ride up to Burlington VT, a great cup of coffee at Cafe VTCruiser60 we loaded
a SM420 tranny with a complete rebuild kit and a 3 speed transfer case into the car.
I've been looking for either a 420 or 465 since the FG and haven't been lucky enough
when one would show up for sale.
So now I've got to re-read all the rebuild info and get moving!
I'd like to have all my new parts in and totally tested before the FG.

Thanks Kiernan!

yum parts lane it that case lower gearing or something don't know 40 parts all; that well

spent the weekend at ricks doing a birf party on Ricks sons 80, Jims 80 and my 80 also we went to replace a rear seal on Jims rear third to find out the pinion was f-ed luckily rick had one kicking around
also welded on the HD sway bar connectors on so i don't rip off my front break lines

The SM420 has a 7:1 first gear ratio giving you a pretty low crawl speed.
The 3 speed T-case has a somewhat lower gear ratio than the 4 speed case
that came stock on my truck.
Pretty sure that Wally uses this setup on his 40 and Kina uses the sm465 (slightly higher ratio)
on Frankie.
Just a good bombproof way for me to get a good crawl ratio.

i get ya, thats great Lane that 40 has come along way this winter

Nice score lane!!

wally uses that setup (sm420 and a 3sp case) with 4:88's.

Mine is an sm420 and a 4 speed case with stock 4:11's, though it does not count as it will seemingly never be reassembled at my current rate.

It is nice to not have to beat the heck out of your rig to do the same obstacles. You will love the lower gears.

put a 3" lift on ricks sons 80 to day and installed some HD lower control arms on my 80 that Jack (Hypoid) fabed up

Not to much wrenching this weekend. Celebrating Bette's birthday and I felt spending it in the shop
wasn't a good idea!
Pulled the axles earlier, drained the pumpkin and got the 3rd loose
last night. Ian ran the jack for me while I slid the 3rd out.
Have to read up on the locker install again.
Ken, didn't you do a write-up about it?
Anyone have suggestions on how to pound the dents out of the front of the pumpkin?
I don't have a torch to heat the metal.

lane if you have a simple mapp gas torch that would work to soften the metal, if you have a brass drift bar that would be ideal to use with a hammer to pound out the pinion cover dents.

just a big hammer. you gonna be ready by this coming season?

Hope so! Getting the locker in and Longfields won't take any time at all. (need to get
the wire c-clips for the inside of the birfs)
Have to rebuild the 420 and 3 speed t-case, have all the parts just need to get brave and try it.
Front drive shaft is at Hollingsworth's getting lengthened.
Sliders need to be put back on.

Pulled the 2H, H41, & TC out of Flip's troopy on Saturday. Big thanks for Team Jason (Fogblanket & Leaping Deer) for making the trip up and :wrench:ing. A warm sunny day, tunes, and cruiser work...it must be spring!

John - Thanks for hosting and hope we didn't horrify Leah too badly.

Now that it's out, I need to make an engine stand...!

m favorite part of the day was when Johna nd family pulled intot he driveway (John sroting his nice metro outfit) and us just standing aroundin his garge with beers (me a soda but the visual was there.)
granted we had just gotten the tranny/tcase out and were taking a break but i can only imagine what John's wife must have thought. great time though and fun hangin with some fellow cruiser heads

I am starting to put the trail rig back together. 305 Tuned port with an off road cam, full manual 700r4, 4.0 orion transfer case. Also beefed up the front axle and added longfields. Howell system for the fuel injection, new painless wiring harness. Tilt wheel and a hydrovac. A little over a month to the spring meeting!!!!
