Your truck is looking great - I wish mine were that pretty.

I don't see any holes left from where the flares were - you welded them up then? Do you do body work as a job or a hobby?

We should get together before you buy tires. From the build you're building, you might want to consider skipping over the 285 and going to 315. 33" to 35" doesn't sound like a big step up - only another inch of lift - but it IS a big step up in off road performance.

You'll catch a bit of :censor: around here for your front brush guard. It's usually called a damage multiplier. You talked about wanting to get a front bumper and winch - I can show you an ARB with a Warn M12K mounted in it.

Fun stuff - limitless possibilities.

I would be interested in the an extra bar for my stock roof rack. Let me know when you get back into town. Grench and BADM and I are going to get together soon for a front end rebuild party since I have the dreaded birf soup. Great 80 guys in the area--do yourself a favor and go check out Grench's rig! Nice looking truck, too--Welcome.

Let me know when you guys get together to do this, I don't think I would be much help but I would love to see what is all involved in doing so.

gretzky,
What year of cruiser are the flares off of? I need at least one, the driver side front. But if I remember correctly there is some differences in the flares by year. I have a '93. I will have to look back and see when the part number changed. Anyone else know for sure on this?

Thanks,
Chapman

Thanks Grench

Oh yea, I almost forgot. Thanks for giving me a ride in your decked out 80 when you were in Lincoln for the 4x4fest, its a beast. I was needing to feel that SC and re-gear. Someday I will need performance enhancements.
And it was also good to meet Aaron and the fellow from Lex that day.

Thanks,
Chapman

Very nice!

:flipoff2:-Welcome, I live in Lexington on your way to CO. I was supposed to go out there this weekend but that fell through :princess: thought we needed to get some house stuff done. Hopefully we will run into each other sometime soon.

Nice! If you're ever out that way on a weekend and need someone to wheel with shoot me a PM and see if I'm free.

Thanks, the picture looks decent but right now it's a 10 footer. I only do body work as I have to, and I'm really not great at finish body work. I just don't have the patience. All I did was weld in new pieces of steel where I had to, weld up the holes and then roughly ground them down and rust protected them. The rest will come with time.

I would love to go with 35"s over the 33"s but I think the cost of re-gearing would put me over what I should responsibly spend right now. Once I finish up grad school it's a route I will definitely pursue.

I have noticed a lot of hate for brush guards around here, lol. I don't love it or hate it, but it is coming off once the truck is in Denver (easier to sell it on CL that way). My biggest gripe about it, is that it hang up on everything on a trail. It really kills approach angles. I'd be interested in checking out your ARB setup sometime. Once I'm done paying for classes it's on the "to do" list!

Thanks for the advice btw!

Thanks! Well I'm back in town for about a week right now. I'm located about 15 miles south of Millard so shoot me an email and we'll try and figure something out: wrhull82@gmail.com

They're off a 95. If you want it shoot me an email and we'll figure something out as well. In the meantime I'll go dig it out of the pile of parts and make sure that one has all of it's tabs left.

gretzky

Here are the year ranges with different part numbers for 80 series, according to SOR.

1/90-8/92
8/92-1/95
1/95-1/98

mine is a 11/92, what is the build date on your 80 series? I still don't know the difference, but something must have changed. If your 80 falls into that middle range like mine I could also use the other front flare and the driver back that is attached to the quarter, not the door. If that isn't asking for too much? Someone has patched my fiberglass and not very well, way before I owned it.

Thanks,
Clint

And here I've been contemplating flare removal - a few of them have gotten a bit loose.

Does anyone know the law around here for how much a tire is allowed to extend past the edge of the fender?

If I pull the flares, my tires might be 1" or so past the metal fender edges. I'll have to get out a plumb bob and check.

Does anyone know the rules?

Right off the top of my head I don't think there is a rule/law about how far your tires stick out past your fender. Here in Lex you see it all, low riders with the tires out 6" plus past the fenders Trucks with big ol mud tires on them way out there. I don't think you would have anything to worry about.

Personally I love the way the LC looks with the fenders on, if I could I would put some bushwacker fender flares on but they don't make them for our LC's.

Grench,
I would leave them on, your Cruiser is too nice to do that. Unless you have fear of ripping them on a tree, I don't see the point. I think they are a big part of the 80 series look. I am restoring a high mileage repo FZJ80 and it is my daily driver. I wanted one for a very long time. So I will paint it and keep upgrading and fixing as I can. I would even have been interested in the rack had it not been spoken for. Someone has removed my rack and put rivets in the holes, I don't care for that. Aftermarket racks I do like, but most kill the already bad fuel mileage. One did on my FJ55. Did you notice a difference, aftermarket over stock rack?

As for the question of how far can the tires stick out. I think it is more of a city ordinance type of law. I am building a 1931 Ford hot rod right now, fenderless, there are many that prowl the streets here in Lincoln, and elsewhere in Nebraska, I'm sure. So I can't imagine you have to worry.

I'm not as concerned about the trees as I am about them simply falling off while driving down the road. They are not held on so well anymore. Thank you for the compliment on my truck - but it isn't all that pretty these days.

So far it looks like one guy wanted one cross member off that rack - if you ask nice I'm betting you could get the whole thing if you want it. They're generally referred to as a 'rust rack' though - and their weight capacity is 100lbs evenly distributed. I removed my rack and put stainless steel machine screws wrapped in PTFE tape into the nutsert holes. Then I LineX'd the whole roof. My wife's truck never had a rack or spoiler installed.

Aftermarket racks I do like, but most kill the already bad fuel mileage. One did on my FJ55. Did you notice a difference, aftermarket over stock rack?
I don't have a rack on mine. Just a LineX roof. I -did- notice a gain of nearly 1mpg on the highway when I removed the old rack. I have since lost that gain and more by putting big tires and lower gearing on it though.

I know it becomes an issue in the big 4x4 areas (Moab, etc...) You're right about not needing to worry about it too much around here though.

It would be my luck that an officer would pull me over for flares and decide to search my truck. That could take all day.

Grench:

I think I saw something on pionerr 4 wheelers website about some one getting puttled over for either too wide tires or lack of mudflaps in the past year by Lincoln...I can't figure out the search function there, but it might be a place to look.

Of course - welcome to the local thread!

The rear drums are relatively easy. Be sure to chock the front wheels well before putting the back wheels in the air - because the ebrake must be off to get those drums off.

Changing the calipers isn't usually overly difficult. The stainless brake lines - do you have >3" of lift then?

The biggest problem you're likely to run into on this is bleeding the brake lines when you're done. It takes a long time, requires two people, and there are 5 points in the system to bleed out the air - which likes to get trapped. Since you're cracking the lines for the calipers, count on running at least 2 quarts of fluid through it before it clears out completely.

I hope you get to feeling better soon - and look forward to seeing more of you in our little thread.

I was searching around on craigslist today and found this in Omaha: 1997 Lexus LX450 4x4

The soonest I am going to be in the Omaha area is for the MO game on the 30th. I sent the poster an email trying to get some more pictures. I think the only way I could talk :princess: into another LC is if it had lockers. 112K is not to bad of mileage though.

Not sure if anyone in the area would be willing to take a look for me?

Oooh. Great color and it has that luggage rack you've been looking for.;) If it's solid, that is a great $. Don't know the stats on LX's but I have not seen a 96-97 Lexus WITHOUT E locks. Hope someone has time to look for you. If anyone knows what they're looking at, this won't be around for long.

I might be able to take a look at it Thursday or Friday evening. No guarantees though - I'm not a mechanic. I can make sure it starts, runs, has/not lockers and give my basic opinion on it. If you get the pics in email, forward them my way - it would be good to get some idea up front as to what I'm looking at/for.
