I wanted to slim down/size down my tires and I am unsure if I am going to have to swap out wheels to get what I want. As shown in the pictures I am currently running Toyo Open Country M/T 35 x 12.50 R18 on Raceline 6 Lug rims. I am wondering how narrow and small I can go with these rims. I am wanting to get to 33" but I live in the snowy mountains and need something more narrow to bite into the snow/ice (am I right in this understanding? https://www.flickr.com/gp/133807464@N08/U5T0x2

If I need to downsize my rims what do you think the likely hood is that someone would trade?

ll,

Ben, consider the 285/70 size tire, these are like 32.6 inches tall, with 11.2 inch wide tread. The Cooper Discovery STT is available in this size, and has a lot of siping for a mud tire.

Good luck,

Alan

Hi all,

Ben, what width are the wheels you are using currently? For those 285/70 tires I'd guess a 8 or 9 inch wide wheel is about right, but you should be able to find specs online about those tires.

Good luck,

Alan

I can't find where to determine the wheel width on the current wheels. Any ideas?

I would go with either 265/70R18 (32.6x10.4") or 275/60R18 (33.2x10.8") with a Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. I live in the Yukon and I use Duratracs on my dually. they are a great true 4 season tire.

Personally I'm in the skinny tires for snow camp. your not going to find a skinny tire for an 18" rim. Why not pick up a winter set of cheap steel rims and go for 7.50 r16 or 235/85 and keep the 35" set for summer driving? I run 7.50 r16 and throw on chains for the rough stuff and it works well.

For a rig that is used off road, within reason, the more tire sidewall that it has, the better traction, ride it will have. For this use, I would not put a 33" tire on a 18" wheel, changing to 15" or 16" wheels would be much better. Also those are "E" rated tires, way overkill for the need, will be much stiffer than necessary, "D" is overkill for most, "C" likely plenty.

You could likely buy 4 33x10.50 BFG ATs and 15" steel rims for the price of a set of 18" tires. TOYO tires are tougher and are said to last longer, but they'll 50% more.
I bought the BFGs because I don't drive mine enough each year to warrant spending an extra $400 on tires that'll age out before I wear them out.

looked at trying these out for the winter, Big O Bigfoot - Snow Tires . Look like a good deal for temporary tires for the winter?

I posted on your other thread. Now that I know what size tire you have those 255/85/16 tires would be shorter than what you currently have, but I don't know how much. See your other thread for rim concerns.
