Hi everyone,
I am currently having an issue with the throttle sticking on my 1987 FJ60. I had been driving the 60 a decent amount for the past few months with zero issues. Then I let it sit for a week or so and that seems to be when the problem started. The throttle stuck wide open on the highway and also wide open on a secondary road. In both cases, I shut the engine down and coasted to a stop.
I checked the linkage and I don't "think" there is a problem there. When the throttle is stuck, you can free it by pushing backwards on the throttle linkage. Based upon what I have observed, I assume that something is sticking inside of the carburetor.
What could be sticking inside of the carburetor that would case my issue? The carb was rebuilt back in 2009. Any ideas?

Thank you,
Zack

I've got a small block 350 with Holley Sniper EFI but i had the exact same issue going with mine and it was very sketchy. I had to adjust my secondary butterfly screws (bottom side of the flap) because the secondaries were getting stuck open. I also added a turn in the secondary return spring to add some tension, haven't had an issue since.

Had this issue on my 86 carb. it would stick open during shift changes when I engaged the clutch; I'd have to kick the throttle to get it to unhang...

Likely glazed/ varnished/ gummed up throttle shaft.

Could be flat spots on the b all studs, but my money is on the shaft.

JimC still does cabrs, BTW.

Check out what happened on my truck here, post 586. Somehow the linkage arm got bent and was getting hung up on the return spring at the carb. Lots of ways a throttle can feel like it’s sticking but that was mine.

When was the carb last rebuilt?

This may not be your problem but here goes my broken record: check the hanger for your throttle return spring, and make sure that it's plumb and level. I had an on and off sticky throttle issue for years and tried everything - springs, rods, ball studs, etc - to solve it, without ever knowing to look at the hanger. It was bent a little when I got the truck so I never knew any better. It would come and go, which was extra maddening.

It wasn't until I pulled the carb and shipped it to Marlin for a rebuild and the hanger got bent dramatically (thanks FedEx) that I figured it out. See below for what I'm talking about, with all the ways FedEx can traumatize a (very well-packed) carb during shipping. Even a little bit out of level will cause problems. This one carb went back and forth to Marlin a couple times for other reasons. No matter how well he and I packed it for the back and forth shipping, it got so abused that we had to weld the base of the hanger before it broke off.

Once that thing was back to level, all the throttle issues went away and have not come back. This better not jinx it.

Mine wasn't sticking full open but would hang up and not always return to a regular idle.

The screw for the AC idle up was in too far and hitting the throttle linkage on that side. Backed it out all the way and stopped it.
