Get it suitable for a daily run to and from work, which is round-trip 7 miles. Then comfortable to go 3 hour trip to hunt. Then making it worthy enough for my wife to agree to ride in it.

Well, I know if you want to keep it for a while the rust needs to be dealt with and I wouldn't try to convince your wife how great "Patina" is, women don't get that so much. Guys on here have fixed a lot worse, so that's good. It takes serious money to take them up several levels, but that's what a hobby is for. Hopefully you have some skills in the automotive field and can do some of it yourself.

Pile or prize, it's all what you make of it. The initial investment really won't matter in the end.

Best of luck with it and post up your progress.

The gauge light says "fasten your seatbelt". It's a long ride with the rust. It'll be more work than you thought once you get into it. Not impossible but a good bit of work.

I would bypass that rig especially at the "by it now" price and the last bid showing. Too much rust/garbage to make it more than $2k.

I want to say I spent ~$4k for mine and it was a LOT better shape than that one.

Also, the "bad" thing with 78+ is the vertical tail lights... not much support out for those.

Can you clarify the "support out" phrase on the taillight?

You spent $4000 grand recently or awhile back?

So this really gets ma goat. Seller wanted to do this outside of eBay. Ok fine, banks are closed so we agree that I would move money from my fun money account over to the PayPal accessible account on Tuesday. Then I would send the money.

Dude starts texting me today about not paying him and if I want out I need to tell him because someone else is asking to buy it and he has a baby coming and he has been burned before. I was like it is Monday and not Tuesday like we agreed upon.

He was all like "we'll another guy has the money now" And I was like "we'll then fine sell it to him, I am out." Then he was like "we'll I just don't want to get scammed and you can buy it now and I am sorry for accusing you of being a scammer."

So this little piggy ain't coming home from the market with me.

That is a grim looking 55. That "surface rust" is deep . I owned a 78 parts pig and the metal of that year was awful once the decay sets in. Do yourself a favour - be patient, find a solid bodied pig and have someone well versed in 55's check it over (if you are not) ..the joy of owning an overpriced 55 quickly dissipates once you're waist deep in rust and regret . Never buy a pig sight unseen ;) Good luck.

Both with factory AC.... Crazy! Hope you put a deal together on the white one.
Keep us posted.

I think you dodged a bullet. That one was not the prettiest girl at the dance, if you know what I mean...

Thank you. I feel humbled because I seem to have all the "FJ55 Godfathers" replying. That said I went to see and hopefully settle on this 1972 Toyota FJ55 "bard find."

Not bad on the sheet metal rust, headliner is dirty but sound as are the floor boards. Frame is surface only. I got there before dawn so it was all flashlights and crawling underneath. Looking inside I find a box with some nuts, bolts and half a main bearing. The guy that owns the shop where it is consigned called the owner. In 1982 Mr. PO was driving his piggy and he "spun the bearing." Pulls it in his barn and starts fiddling with the motor. But he can't get Humpty Dumpty back together again so he bolts things back up and leaves the cruiser in his barn.

Fast forward to recently when he sells his farm and cleans out his barn and consigns the FJ55 to the shop owner.

So a few questions? A. What do you think it is worth? B. What would type of restoration brings an 85,000 mile, 100% complete but non-running vehicle back to be enjoyed for years to come? Is a 5.3 LS swap appropriate for a vehicle that is numbers matching? Do you rebuild the underpowered and crappy F motor to keep it all original? Thoughts from you are appreciated.

Have you thought about what you want out of it? Traveling or just an investment, maybe daily driver, etc. That will answer what your path will be. A bone stock 72 will not get cross country in a timely manner and no creature comforts. Now a 5.3 will rock & roll, good MPG and pull a trailer, etc.
