I have #2, and haven't had any issues thus far. Can you elaborate on what didn't meet your expectations? I usually add a piece of saran wrap over the cap when tightening it so it seals even better. And storing it upright helps.

I'm using the Kelty 2.5 gal water bladders - no problems to date.

#2 (brand new) crumpled at the bottom after just a few miles of travel with a load of water. Creased and cracked. Absolutely ridiculous.

#1's problems are all in the lid. The lid on the first one that failed cracked all the way around the threads and water was pouring out.
And no, I did not overtighten it.

The second one to give out cracked in the lid where the spigot screws in and out. No overtightening there either.

Super crappy stuff, no doubt about it.

Mine are going back to the vendor tomorrow with a few choice words.

I really hate stuff you cannot rely on.

ONLY military spec stuff from now on.

Wow, very impressive. I'll reconsider mine before I head to Baja!

If I had to do it again, I would get a couple of those green plastic military ones, heavy duty.

Then I would bring my swiss military ones for extra!

Here is a pic of the ones I have. About $12 apiece and well worth it. Lay it in the sun and you are toasty for showers!

I got mine at sportsmansguide.com, but I know others have them, like cheaperthandirt.com or omahas.com.

Good luck!

edit: PLUS...the rubber ones store anywhere. Very easy to flop around, on the roof, in the back, on top of your luggage.

I have been using them for years and they never leak. Unless something presses against the spigot button, and that has never happened either.

Skillet-These are the ones you want for a Baja trip:

http://www.dandbsafety.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=224

FirstToy originally found the link and they were only $18 each. They got wise and raised the price but these are still excellent "cans". I agree the reliance ones are pretty cheaply made, though I have 2 of the blue cubes that held up OK.

Generator Joe has a good selection of various cans as well:

http://www.generatorjoe.net/product.asp?0=214&1=215&3=2059

The Wedco water cans are metal/lined and particularly nice. If your life was riding on your water supply, the Wedco's are what you would take. The Scepters are very nice too but not quite as leak proof.

Thanks for the info! Those will be my next purchase.

The Wedcos do not leak, but they do impart a chalky/iodine-like/latex-y taste to the water. Tastes strange - like the paint they use on the waterline of the white cliffs of Dover. That being said, I have two and I don't entirely regret the decision.

Number 2 I bought at walmart, first trip vent plug popped out and leaked about 2 gallons befor I noticed.
Second trip, I made sure is was secure up right...notice water splashing out on trail. Seems neck around threads broke....cut hole in side later in day for draining rear pumpkin on onother cruiser...best use for these pos's.

Next one I buy will be like marshals....note the large openings could be used for other purposes like filling with ice and beverages.

Here is the tank that i have used:

i have two, the first one my parents had before me and used for probably 5 years hauling water to their cabin at least once a month. I took it camping once this summer in really hot weather and rough terrain,no problems yet, they seem very durable.

Skillet FWIW I work in the plastic injection molding business and it is very possible to degrade plastic creating premature failure, if I were you i would get a replacement and if it happens again they probably are junk...you could always try the one i got too :D

That is exactly what happended to one of mine. As I said, the other broke around the spigot.

Friggin' joke.

Just took them back and got a refund about an hour ago. No problemo, off to the army surplus store just north of Moss Landing. :bounce:

I have the Reliance AquaTainer cubical 7gals with spigot from WM.

Great so far if bulky.

I do understand about plastic. I would have thought the same thing except it happened to both of the Aqualux ones, BOTH within a day of eachother. They were brand spanking new. And so was the light blue one. That crumpled in a whole different spot. No more reliance products for me. I simply do not have the time or patience to mess with it.

Sorry barrypt5 but all the Reliance plastic water jugs (including the dark blue cubes) are pure junk when compared to the plastic Sceptor water containers. The Reliance stuff is built for the 2x year camper that babies their stuff. Give those to a scout troop and you'll be lucky to make 1 campout before they start leaking, the water spouts get screwed up, the gaskets get lost, or the caps break or crack.

I bought 3 of the Sceptor cans from D&B Safety and another (a black one) at a garage sale. They are rugged.

If you are storing water, be sure to get the ones that are built for that purpose. The inside lining is food grade and doesn't give a plastic taste to the water. The black ones are good for warming up water by leaving them in the sum.

2X on these. I take 2-3 of these out for field work and have about 100 field days with the current batch. They have held up fine. My department also uses them for student field trips as well.

My only complaint is it is hit or miss getting the spigot pointed down.
