There's ground clearance, and then there's portal axle ground clearance!

If they’ve machined the new knuckle to keep the ABS sensor working using the Toyota bearing magnet so crawl/abs works (no error codes) that would be cool. Would bode well for solid axle swaps. I’d be inclined to SAS before portals

This is pretty awesome but seems to me too many extra parts introducing more places for possible failures.

You bring up something I’ve thought about.. our LCA crossmember being what it is any front axle would need to be pushed way down, leading to a ton of lift. And steering would be a challenge with any solid axle since we’d be converting away from rack & pinion.

These portals add a whole lot of ground clearance while not requiring the vehicle to be sky high, and the steering is already sorted out.

So what would be the merits of SAS if we compared?

I think removing diff and steering rack would give you a decent amount of room, but you are right to be concerned with ride height. Granted I could keep AHC with portals, but the simplicity and potential articulation of a beefy solid axle appeals to me.

Especially something that’s not made by Mr T.
Need to consult Mr Deer….

If money and highway manners and service are not a consideration, I'm in a Unimog all day long. Not a highly modded LC or one-off G-wagon, with less capability and parts availability. Expensive and heavy portal axles pretty much put this truck in Unimog territory.

Maybe a modded Hino to keep it Toyota? But no portal axles.

If there was a 4x4 HINO available in the US for purchase, I'd be the first on the buyer list
