We got our first 08 Cruiser today and it is, well, A V8 Highlander.

The ONLY thing that even remotely interests me is the engine and that can be fitted into an 80, which would result in the PERFECT Land Cruiser...........

I feel relieved that I am not at all interested to part with 71 Grand so that I can claim one as my very own.....

Bummer. So, is the Land Cruiser dead?

I would say that just because the outside may not be appealing to some, does not mean that the inside is worthless. The inside of the 200 is very good. At least to me :grinpimp:

I didn't say it was "worthless," did I? I asked Dan if he thought the LC is dead. I think that I already know your answer on that. I am glad that you like your vehicle, sincerely.

I guess I didn't understand what you meant by is the LC dead.

My mistake

In my mind, and I would say in a lot of people's minds, the Land Cruiser is a very special kind of vehicle that is at the forefront of dependability and capability. That can serve admirably both in Manhattan and in Africa. It is iconic in its ability and its uniqueness. I am asking Dan if this model of Land Cruiser is a marked enough departure from the Land Cruiser legacy to mean that the Land Cruiser ideal is no longer viable.

No apologies necessary.

Also, here's some free advice. If you rush to defend this vehicle every time anyone says anything about it, you will eventually die a death of a thousand little pecks.

Jay it has a very robust frame with, I think, 9 crossmembers, a solid rear axle and heavy front control arms. I imagine it would be every bit as effective as the 100 it replaces.

Did they really have to make it look like a Highlander?................;p

Saw it this morning (and took some pics).

Underneath the "Highlander-like" appearance is a pretty beefy frame and a HUGE rear drive shaft--it is large and in charge.

Rear diff. is pretty big too, though I don't know if it is the same rear diff as in the Tundra.

The front arms look big as well.

That said, it is going to take significant body work to get front and rear bumpers considering that both are integrated into the body much more. Putting bumpers on these will not be DIY but will have to be done professionally at a body shop. As with all things that cost $71,130 out the door, adding protection is going to cost a pretty penny. Sliders will go on pretty easy it looks to me.

The interior is too bling for my taste--too yuppie-ish.

Anyway, pics tonight.

beno,
my impression when sitting in it was that it didn't have enough bling! lol
just goes to show how different perspective is...

I think it's very nice

Yes, it is VERY nice. I suppose I have been a bit too harsh on its exterior. However, it is somewhat comforting to know that others share that same sentiment. Exterior styling aside, the rest of it is top notch. I am still considering purchasing one, but not until the LX comes out. It's also good to know that the aftermarket is hard at work with their products for it !!

Beno said it perfectly.

Aside its ugly exterior, lies a very STOUT truck.

It's a beast underneath the exterior and all of the things that make it a "luxury" vehicle.

But, I am concerned in that the front end is very complicated. Lots of hoses, and wiring and harnesses, etc. This is no longer a plug and play vehicle, and not longer do I think the Land Cruiser a DIYer vehicle.

There are just too many electronic, solid-state, computerized components on this vehicle to make it amenable to shade-tree wrenching (of course, beyond general maintenance).

A lift, bumpers, etc. will take a lot of $$$$ -- I'd say even more than a 100 series or an 80 series (the 200 makes the 80 series look like a 40 series in all reality).

You would need serious computerized diagnostic systems and software to deal with issues that might come up with the "off road cruiser control" or some of the other "smart" technologies.

But the frame, the drivetrain look incredibly beefy indeed.

I have never upgraded any other LC, but I can totally see your points.

I was staring at the front bumper sides today and someone is either going to have to do some nice sheet metal bending above the bumper to make it blend in, or they are going to have to find a way to cut the plastic part of the bumper and then find a way to have it blend or attach to the replacement bumper.

Plus I don't think it is going to be cheap either way.

About the electronics. I don't think any future truck is going to get less complicated as things go on. Good or Bad...I believe it is the future.

No argument here whatsoever. Increased miniturization, increased integrated systemization and smart technologies are going to be the car/truck of the future.

50 years from now, people off-roading in the 2050 Land Cruiser are going to laugh at the technologies that we use today.

That said, I think I'll still hang with my older Land Cruiser.
