Steve,
I found this just a little after I wrote on your expo account. You have done a ton of work, I really want a pig....

I hope I can get my 40 going and trade up.

Please update with more pictures!

This thread really does need an update - and I really need to do some work and drive my Pig some!!!! :crybaby:

I've been swamped with Southeast Overland, consulting, and life in general. Next thing on the docket is a front axle rebuild. (Yoop - I'm gonna go ahead and send your tool back.) I might put a locker in the front but might not - undecided. The price of an ARB is a little steep right now for me.

And sorry to whomever asked me for pics of my front bumper a few months ago. If you send me a PM with your email, or post up here, I'll get those to you.

Oh, before I forget. Here is a little update. The Pig is in the August 2011 issue of Traverse Magazine for an article on our trip to the UP Overland trip in 2010.

 about the magazine article.

that was me that asked about the bumper pics. I figured you were busy, my bumper build got a little sidetracked, anyways.

my email is thorvald10 at bresnan.net if you want to send pics there, or just post them up in here to keep the thread alive. :D

thanks

Wow!! 80 pages of thread! This epic has more plot twists than a season of Days of Our Lives! What's the latest? Get any of that stuff done you were planning on doing last year?

I unfortunately have not touched the Pig in months. Southeast Overland is keeping me very busy (which is good) but that takes time away from my projects. I've even been contemplating (GASP!) selling the Pig. I don't think I've driven her in over a year and I haven't wheeled her since the Michigan trip over a year and a half ago. :frown:

Yeah, there's been alot of people contemplating selling pigs lately, due to similar reasons....no money to put into it...no time to mess with it....need to downsize the fleet...ect...ect.. Bet I didn't take mine out more than twice last year.
Just had to get in it and drive it for several consecutive days, go visit and talk to my Cruiser pal RHINO, and the fever struck again! Not to mention the better financial situation we're in, can actuall get some stuff done (just bought the tire carrier hinge I've been needing for 3 years).
Anyways, if you're thinking about selling but your heart isn't quite there, maybe just go drive it to work a few times, drive it around town. If you still think you want to sell it, let us know!

It's more so I don't have time to use her like she should be. I've put a ton (and I mean a ton) of work into her and she is a really good Pig so I hate to see her just sit. Every time I go to an event I'm in a rush so I hop in the FJ Cruiser and take off. Maybe I'll get some time later in the fall. Heck, I don't even know what to ask for her if I listed her for sale.

I will take it. $1. If you ever want it back you pay me $1 :)

It has been WAY WAY WAY too long since I've worked on the Pig! :crybaby:

The wife and I just moved about 1 hr 15 mins away from the old house to be closer to the shop. Our last trip of the move was to pick up the Pig. She cranked right up after a charge and some fuel was able to get into the carb. She idled perfectly for about 10 minutes in the driveway and then away we went. :bounce::bounce2::steer:

1 hour into the drive and about 15 mins from the new house she died at a light. She would not refire (battery was toast).:mad: No problem as the wife was behind me in my FJ Cruiser. :D I hooked up jumper cables and no go.:mad::mad: I started trouble shooting - we had gas in the carb sight bowl, we have air, we have juice from the jumper cables...must be a lack of spark.

I checked all electrical connections from the battery to spark stuff. Plug wires and coil were hooked up fine. I went then to check for spark by pulling a plug wire and grounding to the block and then a volunteer fire and 3 cop cars pulled up. I was blocking traffic (not much traffic around at 8:30 pm in Seneca SC) but the cops were nice enough to help push the Pig off the road.

In the about 20 minutes or so that we were blocking traffic a few hundred vehicles passed. One Highway Patrol car passed and didn't stop (he might have been on the way to somewhere more important - who knows). About half a dozen mall crawlers passed and didn't stop. One lifted Wrangler with a Hi-Lift on the hood passed, checked us out, turned around and circled around to a parking lot behind us, checked us out again, and then left. What a nice guy.

AAA was called. 45 minutes after AAA was called they called back and said it could be 3 hours til a tow truck arrived. :censor: that. A friend and customer happened by and said he would be right back to "pick me up with his truck." About 15 minutes later he comes back with a dang flatbed tow truck!!!:eek::eek:

We winched the Pig up onto the flatbed and headed to the house. 15 minutes later we arrived, unloaded the Pig, and now she awaits work. I'm getting back on the wagon (literally) and here are my plans.

  1. New Sears Diehard Platinum batteries (2) for dual battery setup.
  2. Figure out what went south with the break down. It seems to be electrical/spark related.
  3. Rebuild front axle (leaky d-side inner seal) and install ARB front air locker. Giggity giggity!
  4. Tie sliders into frame.
  5. Build rear quarter panel protection.
  6. Crawl box - gotta research this more. Giggity giggity giggity giggity!!!!
  7. Cage - how to install a cage without killing my new headliner.
1, 2 & 3 will be done within a few months. 4 & 5 will be done hopefully by the end of the year. 6 & 7 to be done in 2013.

It's time to get back on the trail!!!

Thinking about gears. I'm keeping my 4.11s for highway cruising. Could go with an 4:1 Orion but I like the idea of a ToyBox / twin stick for regular low and then stupid low...

I don't think an internal cage will work without killing my headliner and having to modify the rear sleeping platform. Maybe a minimalistic exo would work to protect passengers...

You might consider the split case with gears.

I'm loving the split case that it is in my 55. Nice and quiet on the road. With the NP203, it made the driveshafts equal length:cool:

They are also rumored to be much stronger than the one piece cases.

I considered an Orion(and it may have been cheaper) but keeping the stock nose cone scares me. Even if it is upgraded with the ~78 ribbed unit with fine spline 2-4 coupler.

For the interior cage, if you get a good shop, they can do it without killing the headliner. I know that my fab guy has done a few tight in the cab cages without destroying the interior.

I'm leaning toward a dual stick setup. In that case I'll probably put in a split case for extra strength, and then add something else to it...not sure what though. I have to get the ARB locker in first.

2 DieHard Platinum batteries are awaiting pickup to replace my old batteries. Can't wait!
