For the last two weeks I have been battling a case of "scratches" on Briggy's white feet. They are nasty infections usually due to horses living in wet conditions. Since Onur and I returned from our honeymoon out West, it has rained in NY. So even though Brig does not live in a muddy pasture, and it is all grass, his feet are almost always damp, which is a perfect recipe for scratches.
Last week the infection developed into cellulitis as the infection travelled up his leg. Within hours the leg was swollen, hot, and he was lame on it.
I already knew what his normal temp and heart rate were, so it was easy to determine that this was an issue that would not improve without meds. I have a great relationship with my vet and instead of charging me $500 to come out at 8 PM to tell me what I already knew it was, she texted me that one of the on-call vets would leave all the meds in the mailbox at the practice.
I wrapped his leg to reduce the swelling and ran to Rhinebeck to get what he needed.
I've been administering 12 SMZs (an antibiotic) twice daily, ever since, and the scratches are much improved.
Not completely gone, but hopefully they will be by the end of the week. I have been washing and applying some topical ointment that the vet wants me to use. First picture is from two weeks ago and you can see how dramatic the swelling; last is two days ago.
Since we have gotten back from our honeymoon, with one brief exception, all we have done is worked. We are both ready to lounge on the beach and play with Katie, my daughter. Leaving for the Outer Banks next Sunday!
