The trail we thought was tougher than pomeroy lakes trail we did the day before. Mt. princeton was a little scary at the top on the shelf road but nothing to bad.

Why did you feel it was tougher? Just the shelf rd? I noticed traildamage rated Pomeroy a little higher. I'd like to do one of these one day.

No Mt princeton wasn't bad, but st. elmo and tincup pass I thought was just as hard as pomeroy lakes trail. The rocks were just as big and there was a spot at the top that was a little knarley. My book rated it as a moderate and I would think it was a little harder than that now. There is also a shortcut that is harder but 2 jeeps on 41's came through there and they said they had a hard time and I should probably not try it alone.

It had Subaru badging on it. I would have to guess it was a Tribeca.

We are looking at camping up in the BV area this weekend. Where would you reccommend we go, has to:
1. Be by water
2. Have a good scenic trail drive but trail cant be too difficult to risk breaking anything. Shelf roads cant be too trecherous as this will be my first.
3. Ghost towns. Old mines. Hiking etc along the way or there would be perfect!

Anyone wanna come with? Leave fri or sat come back sunday.

Pomeroy lake trail is what you're looking for then. Not hard, lots of mining stuff, lake at top to fish. Take air, all the trails in the area are rough and your guests will be ready to mutiny if your tires are at street pressure. There were camping spots about half way up the trail.
There is a toyota jamboree up there this weekend, they were talking around 300 people. Might be crowded.

My wife really wants to go back and camp by mirror lake close to tin cup. You could see the fish jumping all over and there were tons of camp spots. We can't go this weekend but we will probably go back before fall.

Thanks for the help guys. Pomeroy lake it will probably be! Hopefully there won't be fj's all in the way like jeepers ;)

Kara let me know when youre thinking of going to mirror, it is on my short list. Is the trail safe to do solo? Tin cup pass is the way right?

BTW I need to get a good trail map of colorado, what do yall suggest?

Everyone seems to carry the Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer, I think it's worthless for 4x4's, more set up toward hikers. I have a good map book I bought from Barnes and Nobles over by the On the Border off Lake. Colorado 4x4 trails and something or another. Of course the Charles Wells guide books are outstanding, but only for the known trails, once you get into the forest areas, you are on your own.

Mirror lake looks like a great place to get my canoe wet :)

yeah it's doable solo but I was expecting it easier. The funtreks books are great to let you know the great main trails. I would like to get a little canoe on there as well. Oh yeah bring along a couple cans of mosquito spray. I havn't ran into mosquito's since I was a kid back home. Have fun and I will let you know when I decide to go camping.

We will be staying in mt princeton over the weekend. Plan on at least pomeroy lake and probably tin cup also. If anyone wants to meet up call 210-365-2k

Well, I missed the club trip - but it's the last weekend before school starts, so the kids and I are going to head up and camp at Pomeroy lake and/or Grizzly lake on Friday morning and come back relatively early Sunday. Anybody else is welcome!

Just a heads up... I think Grizzly has much better camping. you can camp pretty close to the lake. Pomeroy basically just has a parking area and you have to walk quite a ways.

Grizzly it is then -thanks!

Apparently the first obstacle they call the gate keeper has gotten worse than what is in the Wells book. just fyi

Yikes ... and another year of erosion and such since then! Thanks for the link - the stuff I had read didn't sound to bad. Well, if that doesn't work we'll go to Pomeroy lakes or Mirror lake.

PM'd you my numbers - it'd be cool to meet you guys up there!
