@JohnVee is this what you're up to as well?

It’s crazy how little rain Key Largo got compared to the rest of the state. It made first landfall 30 miles south of me but the worst rain that day was 90 miles north! Then there’s the whole “rest of the state” saturation thing going on.

On the east coast of the US a hurricanes greatest impact is wherever the northwall of the eye or even if it is just a tropical depression is. The area can be as big as 100 miles or as small as 4.
Our old neighbors in Frisco NC stayed during Hurricane Isabel in 2003 said the storm came in the sound drained out and the winds shifted and the sound came back in with no real damage. ( It blew their grill over)
They went out for a drive thinking nothing happened and they got 7 miles south at the Billy Mitchell airfield and a deputy stopped them and told them they were crazy and to go home the island had been cut in 2 spots and homes 7 miles south in Hatteras Village had been swept into the sound. Above them in Rodanthe the island was also cut and had to be bridged with a Bailey bridge for almost 10 years until a replacement could be built.
The 2nd picture was the cut below Frisco NC where the sound opened up to the sea
3rd was the old Sandbar restaurant
4th is all that was left of the Billy Mitchell motel.

We stayed late in the day windsurfing when Floyd hit. By the time we left Highway 12 was flooded and I had water coming in my Jeep through the floor drain holes and my windsurfing trailer was floating behind the Jeep. It was a little too scary so next time we left when we were told too.

Floyd was the first hurricane I ever went through. Was living in West Palm Beach. Helped the neighbors hang storm shutters and plywood for 2 days. Fell asleep, exhausted, in a lounge chair on my patio and woke up a few hours later to find that the major winds had just barely skirted us but the rain was starting. So much rain. The next day began the game of gathering on the ridge next to the road to watch the idiots try to drive through 3 feet of water. A Mitsubishi Eclipse managed to make it the entire couple hundred feet! That was the same day I learned that fire ants are more than happy to bite you under water. Little red bastards.

That a red snapper up top? Thought those were still off limits.
Nope. Gulf, Atlantic State, and Atlantic Federal waters have different rules and seasons. Atlantic State waters have open season year round with a 20"TL minimum and 2 per person limit.

We had 4 days around the weekend in the Keys with winds under 10mph (following almost 2 weeks of 20+mph); it was nice. Now we're back up to 30mph constant with gusts to 40mph. Damned hurricanes. At least it's sunny this time.

Went to Key West for the weekend, then to Dry Tortugas/Fort Jefferson - the least visited National Park in the US.

The fort has a really interesting history from the Civil War era. The scaffolding on the right is wrapped around the lighthouse that is being dismantled, shipped to Alabama, then restored and rebuilt back in the same place.

The seaplane is about a 45 minute flight from Key West. The ferry is 2.25hrs. Private boat is the only other way to access the island which is 70 miles from Key West.

Not sure what this tree/vine is but it was one of the only shade-producing things in the center of the fort.

Took a while to discreetly get a pic of this girl's hat.

The only LC is saw in Key West. Has Nicaraguan plates and a for sale sign. The same company also has a beat to s***, rusted out TR-7 on the same street, so I wouldn't expect greatness outta the 40.

This guy (about 3 feet long) took about an hour to get used to my presence before perching on this rock. Then, every time I'd bring in a fish he'd come to within 5' of me and start bobbing his head. He'd return to his rock once I'd toss the fish back. I eventually got curious and dangled one from my line right over his head; he got up on his back legs and went nuts biting and slapping the fish! That little show brought out about 10 other iguanas. They're an invasive species down here in the Keys and the damned things are everywhere.

This one was well over 2 feet long. Not sure if he came out of the fast water or turned around after coming from above. They swim really well.

Will you be coming back with one of these @JohnVee

Suggestions for a good hike tomorrow please.

Done Old Rag, White Oak, and Great falls quite a few times each. Looking for something new that's good

Maryland Heights is my default recommendation. Medium effort high reward, but heavily visited
