Jamie, there is also a temperature controlled air valve that controls the air mixture when the coolant is below a certain temp (cold) and there is a temp switch that you should also check. Temp switch is a simple ohm check. Air valve is just pinching off a vacuum line to check if idle drops when cold. Both checks are in the FSM under EFI. If you don't have a copy of the FSM it's in my Google drive, I can shoot you a link to the PDF.

Colin - Thanks for the advice. I have the FSM here on my desktop. I will read through the EFI section!

Wish the '85 codes were like the 88 Cruiser - - on the Cruiser you just turn on the ignition, but on the 4Runner you have to short out the wires around the coil?

I hope the gas mileage saved on this thing is worth it! :)

Um - - I remember using a paper clip on the cruiser, too. Wow that was only a couple years ago - how soon I forget!

Really? Gas mileage.

I made a short jumper wire with a male spade terminal on each end. Keep it in the glove box. Works perfect and no risk of falling out while driving. Also works to jumper fuel pump for testing fuel system.

Jamie, did you get your truck back from the shop yet? What did they find?

It was like 6 PM and 12 degrees when it died that night. I put two cans of Heat in it, tried to start it, and then eventually had it towed to SK Mechanics in Olathe as it was too cold for me to work on it outdoors, etc.

After sitting the night, the next morning it ran for them for a few minutes and died - but then they started it back up after 30 mins and it ran until they turned it off.

They proceeded to then test it over 3 weeks and it never died again - at one point letting it run for an hour.

I ended up giving them $20 (they didn't want the money) and took it home and have been driving it since.

When it gets warmer, I am going to put that fuel pressure gauge on that Erik mentioned above, and going to replace all the vacuum tubes - - already have the parts.

I need to drive it more - - can't let it sit for 3-4 weeks :(
No issues since - drives pretty nice now. It was rough driving that night, when I took off -- may have got some bad gas or had some water in the tank - - best guess at this point. Might be an intermittent electrical issue – will have the gauge on soon to see about pressure :)

You get the new tires on? :)

UPDATE:

Learning the 5-speed is apparently a lot harder than I remember it.

I need this kid driving ASAP - taking a 15-year-old 7 miles to/from school AT LEAST once a day if not both is getting old.

A $500 automatic car may be in his future.

I've even considered buying a local truck with the auto transmissions to swap in, but frankly that is a lot more $$ that I don't want to spend right now.

Keep up the fight. It will click soon!

I am happy to report that I THINK Jacob can now drive a stick shift well enough to operate it :)

That said, we are possibly needing to go a different direction with our cars.

We wrapped up end of year and taxes and my wife is putting ~30K miles a year on her work vehicle. Given that the vehicle is a GX470 and getting about 16 MPG around town, she is spending TOO much money on gas.

More to follow, but at 0% for 72 months a Prius V is looking pretty good . . .

What I heard from a friend is that highway miles on a hybrid are comparable to std. Well, he was driving a camry, so that may be different than the prius.
