That under coating looks amazing!!!

Thanks Dave. I'm really happy with it. Tub is supposed to be painted & ready to go on frame by Christmas. That's the gift I've been wanting for years!!

only diesels got the hood liner(or maybe some JDM L or LX gassers) but none of the US market fj40's ever had a liner. So the hood is off a BJ.

Thanks KY. Not sure which years had hood liner. Here's a pic I found with it installed. Found in another Mud thread. Guess I'll leave them as is on my hood in case I come across a suitable liner.

Strange - I don't see any evidence that this is not the original hood. Faded paint matches other parts of the front and a small dent lines up on the hood & cowl. I realize none of that means it's original, though.

Toyodiy.com shows the following part numbers:
53341 SILENCER, HOOD, NO.1
53316-90801 (05/1980 - 06/1980) 1 $668.97
53319-90301 (01/1979 - 04/1980) 1 $763.78

I've entered my VIN# to get to that parts listing, but it does show BJ40 & FJ4* '6903-'8007

interesting. Never seen(that I remember) that on a US spec 40 Did the hood have the emission sticker or vac hose routing on it? think thats where they were in 80

some non US bits have been used on US spec 40's in the past, like the non US inner door panels on a few 74's, vent window on a few 83's

the other hood you showed with a pic of with the silencer is a later hood I think, it has the stainless metal plates on the leading edge of the inner hood(they match up to the rubber bumpers on the bib), my 82 has that. Your hood may have had them and they were removed

there should be a gap on the center support, but about every 6" there is suppose to be the body sealant that is painted body color, between the support and the hood.

I don't remember any stickers under the hood?? I look again this weekend & see there is evidence of anything.

Never noticed those stainless steel plates you mentioned above. Learn something new everyday - especially when you keep up with this forum. The wealth of knowledge here amazes me. Cheers.

few pics of the hood on my 82, original and untouched. My other 82 was identical.

think your hood has the matching rivet holes, just not the plate

seam sealer used on the bottom of the center support

hard to tell but you can see the glob of seam filler toward the top of the center support, same stuff as above

AFIAK an 80 hood should look like this or very close.

BTW, nice work!!!!

Talk about a happy new year!

Freeborn Red has always been my favorite!

Color sanding & buffing next week & then back on the frame. I'll get some pics with a real camera next week, ones above are old iPhone pics. I can't wait...

Back to the hood for a minute. Underneath side, where the hood hinges attach. Should all 3 bolt locations have a captive nut? Or just 2? Both sides of mine are the same with the hole toward the center of the hood NOT having a captive nut.

Funny I just yesterday noticed that my 1980 (May) FJ43 hood is the same with no captive nut on the center most locations (2 captive nuts on each side).

A few pics of the tub outside in the sun - with a real camera... A little bit of orange peel on the dash but overall it looks fantastic. Color sanding & buffing soon.

All that I have seen only have 2 captive per side. I think it has to do with stopping people being able to remove the hood without opening the latches (I guess a security thing of sorts).
