Ok; well a little stumble.

The Holy Truck has a vibration starting at about 90kph. It gets really bad at 110. I suspected immediately that it was the rear driveshaft. The auction guys are not gentle and often pick up vehicles with a forklift from the side. The guys at the garage thought it might be just bad universal joints. I let them try playing with them. But today the foreman wrote me to say: "Sir shaft is in bad condition; From lathe report came as - big minor damage; Small major damage; Balancing for both not possible"

So both driveshafts need replacing; I will go up to Sharjah tomorrow to get a JDM set.

The rear driveshaft not only has a dent, it is actually bent, and you can see it with the naked eye:

My friends Matt and Travis have pointed out that the shafts are both out of phase:

I learned something new today

Apparently 95-97 are 90 degrees out of phase for some reason and not standard:

On the FRONT DS only.

The rear shaft should be in phasse.

Both of your shafts are neither.

Nice candy cane in the rear tube.

The replacement drive shafts have had their u-joints replaced and been balanced.

Now I just need to find the torque numbers for the new set of bolts, nuts and washers.

Just when you think you've reached the end... Leaky windshield.

Turns out it is the windshield surround that is at fault.

I received the new windshield surround without the trim strip and it should be installed in the next few days. In the meantime here is a photo of the new hubs on the truck:

Thanks to @cruisermatt for the complete hardware kit for their installation.

So the new windshield surround is in and I finally got around to putting on the cut down 100 series side moulding, which I like quite a bit better than the wide belting most 80s have.

(BTW, the stack of rims are from off the Troopy. I'm going to schlep them back to Oman to the nice fellow who sold me the troopy so he can put them on something else. Nothing wrong with them but they are damn heavy and I did not ever really like the look of them.)

I'm not particularly happy with the passenger front door moulding. My fault. I pressed the top in first rather than top and bottom at the same time. I will leave it for the moment. I've asked my stellar parts guy Ryan if he can find narrow OEM belting for HT. If he can I will replace it all.
1679232397283.png

I also finally got around to putting in the Planet Audio head unit.
1679232443299.png

A friend is coming from Singapore and I am going to try to drive the HT to Oman with her and I did not want to do that without music/charging point/etc. Nice unit for a couple of hundred bucks. I have it on this truck, the Troopy, and the 105 at present. Nothing special but it gets the job done.

The Holy Truck does not have speakers in the doors. Only in the dash and then one lonely speaker back in the rear, which I don't think works. The sound was pretty poor when I got the head unit in so I put in a couple o new 4 inch speakers. Again, does the job. Not going to win any awards, but it is music.

It has been a couple of weeks but we took The Holy Truck for its first real journey--about 7 hours from Dubai to Muscat, and then back again. Almost all highway driving. For the most part THT performed admirably. Even saw a rainbow--which is quite unusual.

Here is the view from the hotel in Muscat:

And I met up with an old Omani friend and made a couple more new Land Cruiser friends along the way.

The old truck did pretty well up unit the last hour, just as we reached the Emirate of Dubai. I started experiencing hard starting, rough running AND the transmission started acting up--tough to shift into gear. I knew that the clutch would have to be replaced but everything happened all of a sudden. We managed to get back to my apartment and I made up a list of things for the guys to take care of:

I've been away for a couple of weeks and some progress has been made.

The clutch was pretty far gone. I've also asked them to clean everything while it is apart, including the underside of the truck. I always make a point of asking for that. I don't have any more details yet.

Hi OP I did a search and could not find this info in this thread...what size are your new tires?

Have a look here. 245/75R17

So the Holy Truck as been out of commission for a while. Started with some small leaks on the seals for the transmission and transfer case and we decided to pull and inspect in detail.

Problems

Several of the synchros also are worn. These are expensive to replace as is the main shaft. So now we are looking at purchasing a new H152 transmission as a complete unit. I wanted the taller 5th gear anyways. I'm also looking at buying the same new tranmission for Mr. Blue the 105 which has the weaker transmission and short 5th gear, especially given I am looking at adding a turbo to Mr. Blue.

I saw 'chopped 80' and was expecting one of those Aussie ute conversions, but I like this build better! Nice work!

This one has been a real adventure. When I first saw it in person I was really bummed but honestly now, especially now that PowerTec in Jebel Ali is massaging it after a big effort to add soundproofing and do up the body nicely by PowerHouse Garage in DIP1, this is one heck of a nice truck. It still has a ways to go with the dash and a few other things but it moves right along and the list of things that have not gotten good attention is getting shorter and shorter.

We were having some trouble sourcing a main shaft for the transmission. Both cost and time and the car is now out of registration, which adds to the time pressure. I suggested that we do some flame deposition build up of the existing main shaft and use it again. I had a good close look and feel today and I think it worked out well.

You cannot feel anything with your fingertips or fingernails. I'm pretty happy with the decision and the result. Now it all goes back together.

I see quite a lot of time has gone by. Vactions and parts have slowed things down but this week stuff is happening!

The transmission is back together, this time with new synchros and a taller fifth gear:

And this evening it was being bolted in place:

Good news everybody! The Holy Truck is back on the road, and I picked it up today, with new Terrain Tamer suspension parts throughout and a taller 5th.

And Mister Blue the diesel 105 is going in for the same treatment.

I finally found the powder coated hood ornament and got it back together and on the truck this morning.

I have to replace the steering wheel, probably with one that I cover with camel leather this weekend, and I've got do do something about the dash, and there is still the rough idle to deal with. But I gradually am getting there.

So I've been driving the Holy Truck a bit and even had it out on the sand lately
1700038393991.jpeg

But it has had a rough idle and just was not 'right'. So yesterday I brought it in to PowerTec.

As context, in April 2022 I had splashed out on a new OEM carb and fuel filter. I also asked the guys that were working on the car at the time to clean the fuel tanks and lines. I know they blew out the lines but apparently that was where the left it.

Here's what was found:

The brand new carb idle had been adjusted by means of the high speed jet, not the idle jet, hence a bit of delayed throttle response and general lackluster power and pretty poor gas mileage for a manual 80 -- 11.5 MPG measured last week. Even I knew you are not supposed to adjust the high speed jet on a brand new carb. Hard to understand how they got it that wrong.

Here's a photo from April 2022 with the newly installed carb and fuel pump:

It is kind of a testament to how good land cruisers are in a funny way. Amazing that the damn thing was running at all, much less at highway speeds.
