Oh, and as for *why* brazing, it's probably because it puts less heat into the panel. Since it's two pieces of sheet metal butted together, it's probably more susceptible to warping than the overlapped gutter, and right at a spot where it would be obvious.

From what I've read, the problem people have had with primer and filler sticking to the braze is actually due to the flux residue. Body guys who advocate brazing recommend thoroughly washing the area with water. Probably not everyone's favorite complication when we have MIG welding as an alternative.

That's just my opinion from dabbling in bodywork, welding, and brazing.
I had heard it was something related to the flux.

I would think with a torch it would cause more warping, but IDK, I guess it's how you control the heat.

I used to be really damn good at brazing, but I haven't done any for 35 years.

I stopped by again last evening. Progress continues.

The new carb and fuel pump are in. Just need a new fuel filter.

This little trim thing down here seems to be bent up on most of the 80s I see. Fortunately, the poor old donor truck had a pretty good one.

Looking pretty good...

We have a big cleanup yesterday.

While the guys held it up, I snagged the main/sub valves and hard piping. I did not bother with the sub tank. I've got two running trucks with the sub tank and spares are a bit hard to find, so they are going on the shelf.

That's the engine going in the truck. My fiend from Abu Dhabi helped as did I after I took the photo.

Bit of an ignoble end to have your carcass hauled off by an overloaded Kia, but we all have to go sometime and the poor old 91 did donate many bits to many projects.

Saying goodbye to the poor old donor truck being hauled off as garbage reminds me of my favorite scene from The Trouble With Tribbles:

I'm not sure what the official title is, since I only have a PDF copy and there's no cover page, but the folder is named "1994 Land Cruiser Collision Repair Manual".

Edit: the circles inside the black squares are listed as "spot weld or MIG plug weld".
Is there a publication number or something that might help identify the publication?

One of the most shocking things in this entire thread is how pristine the paint is on the inner sides of that truck. I can't even keep the paint on my bumpers in good shape, and here they are tossing scrap steel in there!
I think they respray pretty often... Not too expensive here.

They have sealed up the holes for the fender skirts nicely.

Here are the barn doors:

I am thinking about putting narrow steel wheels on this truck; partly so that it sits up high and partly so the wheels are completely inside the fenders.

I still have not decided on the color scheme but I am still leaning towards a black top and white body.

I'd suggest looking at T449 Cadet Blue, 6H9 Grayish Green, and 416 Dune Beige. T12 Cygnus White might be a nice alternative to 045 white. I'm partial to older Toyota colors, but that might go completely against your aesthetic preference.

And I, too, think you'd be crazy to do a black roof, unless you're shipping it to Alaska.

I do kind of like this color scheme:

I need to find some web tool out there to try different schemes on the 80....

Today I am giving up and changing the title of this thread yet again to use the name I've been using every day: the "Holy Truck"

And I made a decision on the paint. Factory white. Per the data plaque it is Toyota color 045. And anyways, what other color could I choose for the Holy Truck but white?

And it is going into paint today I believe:

The Holy Truck is looking pretty good, I think.
