The sand blasting of the rear window frames had mixed results.

I'm going to go ahead and powder coat the better of the two and then have a look at the other set I have.

I know this is late but maybe vapor honing may have yielded better results
You may be right, but it was not easily available. Fortunately there are a pile of rear windows in poor condition in Sharjah that I can pick and choose from for the metal frame component. I will then try to get new rubber pieces.

I changed the title of this thread because the focus is changing now to the repair of what I've decided to call 'Holey 80' or the "Tryptophobia-Inducing Truck'.

Progress is accelerating now.

I've been trying to think if there is something I should do while the truck is in this condition. Something I should add? Provision for a light bar? Camera?

Here's a photo of my three 80s all in the same place getting things done.

The turbo diesel is in the foreground, my daily Omani diesel is in the middle and Trypto is there in the back.

Just because some of you enjoy some of the context, I've started using another garage in another part of Dubai. So I do my day job then go up to the warehouse and try to accomplish something, then I drop by the new garage, then I go home--usually 9 or 10 at night. There is a new 'hypermarket' I've started going to.

Gotta love some of the names they choose for businesses in the Middle East. There is absolutely no irony in this name. Here is what I picked up:

That's a pretty good price for wagu-like beef. About 5 USD. I try to reward myself a little for making some progress on the various projects. Like last night I hunted up the brackets for the OEM winch for the turbo diesel.

I went by the shop this evening and Trypto has a new frankensteinian top on, or almost on...

It is looking pretty good to my eye.

I also ordered new solid (not split) rear windows for this truck and one of the other 80's. I really don't care for the sliding rear windows found on most of the 80s.

I changed the title of the thread again because I've decided to name this truck 'Trypto' in honor of the fear its holes inspired.

Progress continues. I've gotten the rear tire carrier and wiper arms and pintle back from the powder coaters in semi-gloss black and they look very nice.

There is some finessing going on with the roof and progress is being made.

Interestingly, Mr Toyo used a construction adhesive of some kind shen the truck was first assembled. This will be stripped off and new adhesive will be used.

I like that they are taking their time with this and getting it right.

Have you decided on a color for this truck yet?
White!

I really like white on a desert land cruiser. Can't really say why. I'm also loosing the fender flares, which is the first time I have tried that. I am playing with the idea of powder coating the hood and the grill thing where the windshield wiper arms come out either in black or something more interesting. It will have a black beltline I think.

I get it but I think you mean “trypophobia”.

Doh!

Thank god for the edit button.

The truck's name is now 'Trypo' which arguably is a better name for a truck. I wonder if I can get a vanity plate in Florida....

Another random online store in Dubai:

As for Grandiose Hypermart, they do not advertise wagyu on their website, grandiose.ae. This store in DIP1 is a bit strange. It is in an industrial area, two blocks from where Trypo is being worked on, and pretty far from any residential areas, much less up-scale residential areas. It is close to the Dubai Expo location...well fairly close. When I go in there are only a small handful of customers. I will ask the butcher about the wagyu next time I am in. I do see that they are trying hard to attract upscale based on price. For example, Spinney's the upscale UK market sells prepared chicken caseer salad for 3.90 AED per 100gm, but Grandiose sells a comparable product for 2.90. They may be trying to buy a customer base.

I stopped by the garage this afternoon and I'm very pleased with the work. The body-man is taking his time and doing it right.

It was wonderful watching him hammer on Trypo. He knows what he is doing. And he is saving this 80. I could not be happier.

Firstly, I went back to the Grandiose supermarket, and no more wagyu beef. So that's that.

Progress continues on Trypo:

I'm thinking of a black and white color scheme. Black above the window-line; white below. No fender flares.

Keep the roof white or your heat load in the desert will be high.

I'm impressed that they appear to have actually brazed the roof on, the way that Toyota specifies.
I'm curious, where do they spec that?

I'm not much of a bodywork guy, so I don't follow that part.

However, many years ago, I brazed trim holes shut on a 69 Chevy pickup I prepped for body work. I was told then it was not a good idea. Not sure why.

Oh, and as for *why* brazing, it's probably because it puts less heat into the panel. Since it's two pieces of sheet metal butted together, it's probably more susceptible to warping than the overlapped gutter, and right at a spot where it would be obvious.

From what I've read, the problem people have had with primer and filler sticking to the braze is actually due to the flux residue. Body guys who advocate brazing recommend thoroughly washing the area with water. Probably not everyone's favorite complication when we have MIG welding as an alternative.

That's just my opinion from dabbling in bodywork, welding, and brazing.
