Fixed my speedo issue. Its working now. The dash lights still don't work. Bulbs are all good. I guess I'll track that down tomorrow. I also painted the transmission cover and will put high temp undercoating on the bottom side tomorrow.

I am at a complete loss. I have spent the past month on and off trying to fix electrical issues and I am about an inch away from setting the thing on fire and pushing it off a cliff. I have searched and searched and read threads and can't, for the life of me, figure it out. So let me list what I am having go wrong and please, someone, help me.

The blinkers will click once when I move the stalk either way and won't blink, the blinker lights (all but the right rear blinker) will light up and stay on continuously. The right turn signal flashes once on the dash, then goes out. The left turn signal on the dash cluster never lights up. I have pulled the blinker relay, took it apart and cleaned it, and no change. The flashers don't work at all, I have taken the flasher relay apart and cleaned it, no change. The right rear bulb on the blinker is good, but it won't light up. The brake lights don't illuminate any brighter (or work when the headlights are off) when the brakes are depressed (used to before I started working on it) but the lights illuminate when the headlights come on. The bright lights do work.

The dash lights don't work at all, the right hand turn signal lights up once and then goes off. The horn does not work. The rear back up lights stay on continuously now (since I have worked on it) and will not go off.

I have cleaned the blinker and flasher relay like the threads suggest, I have confirmed all bulbs are good (except right rear blinker, which I can't figure out), I have bought a new battery, I have changed all fuses. I have an electrical diagram from the FSM (which grounds aren't indicated where they are) and have tried to chase down the issues using that, but I am at a dead end and so frustrated I can't see straight.

I can pull the tranny, change the radiator, and put it all together again, but I cannot figure out these issues with the electronics it seems. I am stuck and it is just sitting in my garage and starting to really bug me.

Sounds like your entire harness is buggered. I know folks hate the painless wiring harness. But, it's a start.
Also, I'd post in the 40-section. You'll get more detailed help there.
I wish I could come help one weekend, but that'd be just 4 eyes wide...

Do you mean pain in the ass wiring harness, not painless? And I hate posting in the 40 forum, they will flame me because someone smarter can work a search function better or something. I'll wait a few days more of searching and looking here then maybe post there.

know whachu mean.
It's all magic anyway. That'll be the onliest way it will work. magic.

Honestly, a lot of times, the only way to get soemthing to work... re-do it. At least the wiring harness to the 40 is not as big.
You might be a candidate for a new harness.

I feel your pain and have the same sentiments toward a Miata. Mechanical stuff no problem, replacing a soft top ^(^Q(*@^*^Q&$^*.

Does sound like the problem is an old wiring harness. Coolerman in the 40 forum was producing new harnesses. Have you looked at this website?

Always gotta be one JackAss that will race to be the first to tell you "Search is your best friend". Sharing knowledge is the reason these forums exist. If all the answers can be found in the search function, then why is there a forum instead of just an answers database.

don't be afraid to ask, from the rules in the help section:

Tech - obvious....ask a question, provide an answer...'search noobie' is NOT an answer unless you also perform the search, show how you found the answer, and answer the question. Nothing I hate more than 'search noobie'.

Mj,

Where in Birmingham are you? I am in Bluff Park. I would enjoy getting to see your work. Drop me a line sometime?

He was on the south end of North Shadescrest, but has since moved to Prattville.
Let me know a Saturday or Sunday you wanna bomb down there and I'd be game to go help/point/laugh/cry

Will do Speeder!! You may be more help than me! You helped bail me out of a Bye Bye Baby mess I had on my hands with my old '75 Cruiser.

Hey C, that's what we're all here for!
I'm not much help when it comes to 40's.... unless you want me to follow them ALL WEEKEND! LOL!
I was the only 80 in a group of 40's at Mardi Krawl.

I'm in the Prattvegas now. I was at 26 Shades Crest, right near 150. I'd love any help I could muster. I am about to post it in the 40 thread for help now and hope someone can diagnose it. I have kept tinkering and searching and no luck. We'll see I suppose.

My post over there is live, let's hope someone can point me in the right direction.

MJ,

If blinkers are still your problem, try cleaning up the surface where the bolt that holds the blinker housing meets the underside of the front fender. I understand this is where the blinkers are grounded. I had similar problems that were remedied by doing the aforementioned.

good Luck,

c.

Paul! FB don't lie! Go Lookadem pics!
You wheeled with FJC's!
Although I do remember you being with us part of one day. So my B.
Then those tires you bought from that homeless dude took a dump.

i need some decent 40 porn in my life... what is going on with this??

It has been a long time since I have posted. I have sealed the seams inside the cruiser, installed a new radiator, and in the middle of putting the interior back together. It will be line x'd in the next few weeks. Also just ordered a soft top and removed my hard top. Need bows now.

I am going to just pull it to ACC I guess to sort out the electrical issues unless anyone else knows anyone local to Alabama/Georgia that can work their magic on the electrical frustrations in the 40. I am convinced it the grounds, but I can't figure it out.
