I need a new battery in the taco as it cranks like s***, leaks and is bulging a bit. I dont want an optima so whats a cheap dry cell battery that i can winch off of?

I have a farm and fleet AGM that was in my 80 for 4 years without issue, in fact that battery is now in my 1st gen and I put a die hard platinum in the 80. They were just on clearance at sears for 159, which is a steal.

Why no Optima? My yellow top works like a charm for years.

Oh, didn't know that. Day one of 2014 and I'm already smarter than I was in 2013.

Sears Platinum.

Oh, sorry you said the cool kids.

Die hard platinum(Odyssey), is definitely the cool kid battery. But they are about 200$

Wall Mart ever start max is cheaper and has a three year replacement... I use one in the 40... I like...

200 ouch! I hope it holds out until i can save my pennies. On a positive note i have convinced the wife to give up school and the aspirations of a rewarding career and get back to work so i may have funds again.

Dura last Gold is a very good battery with 3 year replacement warranty. Also very costly. Not a dry cell tho. I hear great things about the Die Hard Platinum (Odyssey) which will be my next battery in the wheeling rig.

I think theres a duralast gold in there now, its been good to me with ALOTA of winching done on it. Its on the begining stages of telling me to get fawked.

Check sears and k-mart, these were just on clearance for 159.

Found this thread through search. What size diehard is recommended for a 73 40? And it seems the platinum grade is a marine battery. Is this true? My battery died this morning so I'm purchasing a new one this afternoon. I hope you all made it through the recent storms alright.

The platinum does have a 9 year warranty!!!! 4 years direct replacement, then the 5 year pro-rate starts! That is how I justified the up front cost. Plus the same batt with the odyssey name on it is almost $400.

Some of the platinum's are called marine batt's. But according to a Sears (and logic), they are exactly the same battery. The only difference is the marine grade has a shorter warranty, because the marine environment is so much harsher.

As for sizing it for a 40.... It is the same as sizing any battery. But If I were to put one in my 40 I would modify the tray a little to fit a p1 or p2.

I just checked sears website and it looks like they may have changed things... looks like there are no more platinums for auto grade??

Gold looks like an AGM....

I only looked for a second....best to check it out...

I finally had enough and decided to replace my battery. I got the Lc in March of 2913. The previous owner replaced the battery in Feb of 2012 yet it was already crapping out. Either the PO got ripped off or it was run dead several times and auto batts can't recover well.
I didn't want to spend for an Optima or Sears platinum. 200 is too much for a vehicle I may not own for long.
I did the usually internet searches and came across a Mercedes Benz owners forum. The three batts they were recommending were the oem, Sears and Autozone gold.
I was surprised. Usually every forum rags on anything from Autozone. Someone mentioned somewhere that the dura last gold is the same as manufacturer as a Diehard Gold. If so, that's good.
I got a 27 size Duralast Gold. It was rated for high cranking and cold cranking amps.
Not cheap but not too expensive.

I've bought 5 of the Duralast Golds. A friend of mine who is into diesels told me how great they are & that they are a battery of choice amongst diesel guys. I have been well pleased with all of them & plan to put one in my F150 soon.

Didn't know about them being the same as the Die Hard.
