You know, that 237 is a POS. Absolutely the worst lantern Coleman ever made. They ran bad from the factory. Everyone hates them because the're Canadian (or most of them are).

I will give you $5 for it. LMK

I have no idea if you are serious or not, but you sound like my father with that line.

"These chocolate chip cookies are no good, let me eat them for you so you don't have to fight them down..." :D

That's nice.

There was an undesirable propane lantern that came with the proper green hat for this one. I'll bet you could find out which one with a search.

You could also ask in the classifieds on the Coleman collectors forum.

Why are your pics sideways most of the time?

Thanks, I'll look and see what is available.

The sideways pics are from the 'mud app on my phone. If I do them vertical, they end up sideways. Horizontal, they end up proper. No clue why..

On my phone, the web 'mud page does not work well with attachments.

Edit, this the propane lantern ??

They are all users. Unfortunately, when I see a nice condition 3 burner on Craigs for $20 or less I just go buy it figuring someone will eventually want it.

....
Between yard sales and Craigs list there is no reason anyone can't have a nice set of Coleman equipment for under $50. I decided to go dual fuel this year and found a stove and lantern for under $30 combined.

I don't usually like Coleman lanterns but we spent last weekend camping and hunting north of Elko. It got dark early and we were up way before first light every day so the lantern got a fair workout, probably 4 or 5 hours each day. It was also very handy when I was skinning my deer after dark.

Just discovered this thread. I just started my Coleman kit with a modern 2 burner model 424 Dual Fuel. What can I expect in terms of durability? Is there any problem using unleaded in it? Will it burn cleaner or better with higher octane gas?

Next is a lantern - should I look for a vintage, or is the modern dual fuel acceptable? Most of the stuff I see on Craig's looks really bad.

Your 424 will run fine on unleaded, but the generator will last longer if you run Coleman fuel. Other than that it should last your whole life. Higher octane gas will make no difference. I'd recommend you use Coleman fuel most of the time, and only use the unleaded in a pinch.

I think the older lanterns are more fun, but a newer one like a Northstar would be nice too. I have a 295 Powerhouse that works extremely well, but isn't a classic. Look around on Craigs list and you'll find something for $20 that will work great. If I were you, I'd look for a later 220/228 if you want a double mantle or 200A if you want a single mantle.

One could argue that lower octane fuel has fewer additives so would burn cleaner.

Yeah, but race gas smells better...

I wonder what Ethanol does to the filler gasket...

Thanks Drew - not sure I know what you mean by "the generator".

The generator is is the steel tube that goes from the valve to the manifold. The burner heats it and vaporizes the gasoline. That makes the gas that is then burned on the burner. It can be replaced for about $15 when it eventually gums up. The better your fuel quality, the less carbon gunk ends up in the generator. Coleman fuel is pure naptha and is hotter and less prone to mess up the generator. On a "dual fuel" stove, the generator is a bit bigger and can accommodate more gunk.

Thanks. Sounds cleanable. So, if I start running my Taco on naptha, that would simplify things, right? One fuel to rule them all.:wrench::hillbilly:

Are the rubber pump seals total chit? I put new seals in my Sears stove, used my it once in May, emptied the fuel out of it and went to use it this weekend and went to pump it up and it was not working... it felt sticky.. I could force the plunger in, but it took a ton of force and just felt like the rubber might have broken down already and gummed up.

Are the leather cups available anywhere? I managed to get it to work, but it was annoying.

I have seen some for sale on Ebay for fairly cheap. I do not know the quality tho. I need some as well. THe 6 for ?$10.00 shipped on Ebay seems like a pretty good deal tho.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Cold soup would have kind of ruined an otherwise awesome Rubicon trip this weekend!

I've driven my cruiser on Coleman fuel on more than one occasion when I've run out of gas. Always have a can of Coleman bouncing around in the back.

The leathers are available from Old Coleman Parts, or from Ebay. The ones from Sefaudi in Turkey are the very best you can buy. Highly recommended and much better than the coleman alternative. I don't think the rubber ones work as well, particularly when they get old.

Just a heads up-the all metal older pumps are much better than the newer versions. I like the really old ones where the leather is held on by a square nut that threads on the shaft of the pump. Second best are the all metal ones with the push on nut, and third best has the plastic backing disc and push on nut.

Yeah, the rubber ones I put in in May and now it's feeling like it's melting in there... I have not actually taken it apart yet. We had some major stove issues this weekend. Mine the pump was so stiff it was hard to get it pressure built. Friends propane one was acting up really bad too... we think because it was so cold. It was shooting liquid out the burners. I am quickly becoming a huge fan of liquid fuel stoves. Still have not got either of my lanterns fixed, but I'm thinking I'm going to like them too.

Thanks, I will see if I can find the Turkish ones to replace the junk rubber ones I put in.

found an old coleman 242c with a 12 48 on the bottom i forgot i had hanging in the stairwell at home . Took it out to the garage and tore it down . The cleaner lever is stuck and wont spin . I got it soaking now so maybe i can get it out . Looks like the rod is rusted and jamming up the packing as I got the nut off but still wont turn .

My scores from this weekend. :)

Heh, you can kind of see my other non camping related treasure I got, an old mining era hard hat.
