that branding is actually raised and my thoughts was that it was sanded down or leveled in some way hence the ghost image of the oval.

From what I've read/seen that's the way that they all are. :meh:

Check this out. only buy the snorkel if you are going to use it for this reason like the video , Not only for rock crawling weekends. YouTube - Esnorquel en camioneta.

I realize with that video you are probably kidding, but if you are not, there are PLENTY of reasons to use a snorkle, even if you never cross a river or other body of water.

I wouldnt even do it if it were free, shipped to my door. Too many variables. Just think about lining up their template and taping everything off, and in the back of my mind I would be wondering if its really too good to be true as I prepare to holesaw a gaping hole in my truck. Will everything line up? Can it take the heat and cold? No thanks. You might get lucky, but id rather pay the cash for the real thing.

I love ARB products and would rather save my pennies than buy this knockoff. But the existence of the knockoff might mean that ARB should trim its margin a little. Would *anyone* buy the crappy snork for $100 (with shipping) vs. paying $200 for an ARB? I sure wouldn't. So if ARB wants to kill the competition, they can.

FWIW, the Safari snorkel is not made by ARB, but actually a company called Safari. Same ones that did the turbo for the 80. So ARB is just reselling the product.

Different company.
Safari - Snorkels

Snorkels are also a very uneconomical item to ship. Small weight and huge volume. The guys that commented on the freight being a ripoff does not know the sizes. The 80 series snorkel only weighs 13lbs, but the dimensional size is about 50bls. That is the freight you pay for. 56"x19"x8".

So even if you packed a container full of these, your per unit shipping is going to be very high.

Christo is correct... I just finished placing an order for 1 unit of these snorkels and the lowest shipping quote I was able to get was $ 113 This is because of the volumetric weight they culculate which was around the 50lbs Slee estimated... Anyways I was giving an option where I can add other different product to increase the weight over the size ratio but I declined... I have a snorkel on its way. the estimated delivery time was 25 -32 days... oh well...

I read this thread a while ago and I can't remember if this particular web page I stumbled across has been linked yet. It was found on the safari page that Christo linked above.

Don't Get Burnt - Low Quality Snorkel Copies

Safari is well aware of the Chinese versions and has addressed the problems found in the plastic formulations used etc. They also link their laboratory data.

I'm not knocking you for seeking out an alternative option and I'm sure you have already weighed out the risks/benefits for your situation. Please keep us posted about the product when it arrives.

If shipping wasn't so much$$$, you might be able to get away with buying a few of these knock off versions and be fine if one degrades and needs replacing.

However, IMHO, it's probably better to just go with the safari from the beginning as they are well built, high quality units. Besides, it's always nice to support our vendors who not only provide high quality products for our niche vehicles but also support responsible land use which helps keep public land open so we can enjoy our land cruisers in their natural habitat.:steer:

I am interested if this is going to happen... I'm in for the risk and can verify hole location from another mfgr install template.

I wanted to chime in on this. A friend of mine just swapped his 3.0 to a supercharged 3.4 in his 91 Yota truck. In swapping motors he changed the air intake from drivers to passengers side. He had to make his own snorkel. He bought one of the chinese knock-off intakes "It even vaguely says safari" and mish mashed parts to form his own kit. It is junk! It cracked all the way down the back of the neck about a week after install. The material is more like fiberglass than plastic it's very brittle with no flex. IMHO stay away from them. Just my .02C
