The (2nd to) Last Hurrah... a 2007 HZJ105 - 'Missus White'

We had some good news today. The customs examination is complete. Now the container goes back to the port where the freight forwarder can retrieve it. I visited the freight forwarder today to meet them in person to get an idea of the timing.

I also spent some time at the BC insurance agency going over the various title documents with them. I was relieved when they confirmed that I have all the documents they need. All I need to do now is get a BC inspection. This will require adding a device that turns on the parking lights whenever the ignition is on. I should be able to manage it. I also can get a temp tag to allow me to drive it to the inspection station.

If luck is with me, I should see the 105 again on Thursday or Friday.

I am still cooling my heels waiting for Missus White. The freight forwarder is still doing stuff. And Labor Day is Monday in Canada as well as the US. So I am hoping I can get access to the truck tomorrow. In the meantime I have just realized that I don't really understand the Daytime Running Lights requirement in Canada. I really hate cutting into the wiring of Missus White and further complicating things is that after searching here and elsewhere it seems the 100 series was designed with DRL incorporated into the wiring harness. But I don't have a photo of the correct portion of the engine bay to make sure and have no idea if it would work if I plugged in a DRL relay. The EWD hints that DRL is implemented in Missus White:

If anyone has any helpful advice I'd be most grateful.

John, don’t cut the harness!!! Never cut harnesses if you can help it.

@gnarlynick2072 might you be of assistance?

John, no idea about the HZJ, but on 2007 UZJ the daytime running lights are enabled/disabled through Techstream.

Andrew
Thank you Andrew. I will take a walk over to the local toyota dealer in Langley armed with the VIN and see if they can confirm anything. It sure would be nice not to install that little box.

I wish I were more plugged into the local LC scene here in Vancouver.

Doing DRL is SUPER easy on a 100! Don't cut ANYTHING. Send me a PM and I can walk you through it, I might even be able to mail you my relay setup to make things easy.

Well the most senior guy in the Langley Toyota service department was quite firm and convinced that text stream will not activate DRL on any 100. So now I'm going to go across the street to Dundee Auto electric after sitting and having a coffee courtesy Mr Toyoda

I went back to the insurance agency today and got a 1 day permit to allow me to move the car around.

I love this community. Several folks jumped in to offer advice. @gnarlynick2072 jumped on a video call and walked me through what I need to turn an 8 CAD relay and a few wires into Daytime Running Lights compliance -without- cutting into anything.

I will do another new, more detailed, thread on this but here is the upshot:

And Canadian Tire has the standard relay in stock, so I will go pick it up and some more spade lugs first thing in the morning.

To add to your good work - someone has documented the process.

My 'leccy used a 5 pin aka "change over" relay for turning my LED foglights into DRLs. The DRL is on, until the light switch is turned on - including the auto lights setting on the stalk.

I'm in the same boat to do the exact same mod. May I know which wire or fuse you get the DRL power from?

Hi AF,

Here is the place I found a convenient ACC-0n source:

(minus the zip tie which I added)

Here is the whole 7 CAD relay setup:

I was told that it was very important that the lamps say either SAE or DOT on them. Fortunately Canadian Tire had some inexpensive lamps available. I just used 3M body trim tape to mount them. It was 'good enough for government work.'

If I had to do it over, I would definitely add a 15 am inline fuse.

The upshot of the above is that I did manage to pass the Canadian inspection at Canadian Tire! And then a few more hours to work through the process with the Westlands Insurance office that originally reviewed my documentation and I had registration and plates!

And no, the DRL's are not attractive.

Missus White also had some unexpected company in the hotel parking lot:

The next day, I decided to head to Vancouver Island as I had heard it was a nice drive. This was approaching the ferry terminal:

Vancouver Island is really spectacular... hard to describe really.

This old 105 certainly seems right at home in Canada!

I like it a lot and now I want one too :(

Looking good, John. Beautiful pictures. Glad to see the plan all coming together.
