@70 FJ40 2 foot driving is fine but just know it defeats ATRAC. So to tackle that obstacle, just hold that steady 1800-2200 rpm the entire way. In other words, either ride the brake the entire time or don't touch the brake at all.

When he hit the brakes, even with a moderate amount of pressure might not be enough to prevent rollback because all the braking force is on that one down hill wheel with traction. That wheel only has one caliper with one piston trying to stop 5500 lbs. If he had a rear locker, he would have at least two brake calipers with braking force on that one wheel. If he had front and rear lockers, all 4 calipers would provide braking force on that one wheel.

So, the moral is: no 2 foot driving with an ATRAC 100? Just dont wanna do this to my truck.
Ultimately, this has to do with the instant stopping of forward motion. A wheel that spins and then instantly catches traction is putting all of that force through the axle or differential and similarly when that axle and differential is in forward motion and then gets a rollback, that is putting even more force on that front axle and differential. This also happens when people are on ice or in mud and the spinning tire gets instant traction when revs are up.

Smooth forward motion is the way while letting the truck do its thing.

While these guys are popular, like many YouTubers, they are not really mechanically inclined.

Haven't watched yet, but might have to.

My approach with ATRAC (and frankly without) is just always avoid more throttle when crawling. Super slow, controlled throttle. On the 100, you either have the diff at risk or the axle splines. Neither can handle much shock load.

Granted, my approach isn't very entertaining to onlookers, haha.

In this instance, he should have simply taken his foot off the gas when he started rolling backward uncontrollably. I probably have a slightly different ATRAC system than you guys do, but I usually just stay on the gas (while ATRAC does it's thing), or go to the bottom and try again after reaching a complete stop. But, that was before I invested in F+R lockers. Which I though I'd never use, but I've activated one or both on even small wheeling trips as they make it much easier and less dramatic to climb stuff.
