I apologize for not knowing the correct name of the components that I’m having problems with… But I suspect most of you will understand exactly what I’m talking about. I’ve got a 1988 FJ62.

I took the kids for about a 45 minute ride in the Uwharrie national forest when all of a sudden “Colonel Foghorn” died. I realized that it was hot and discovered that the blower mounted on the driver side, which sucks air in from the driver side was not blowing. I validated that the relay that controls it was good and I validated that the motor was good. I discovered that it is controlled by a sensor which is mounted in close proximity to the exhaust manifold. I believe the sensor has gone bad. I have done the cheat move by disconnecting the wire from the sensor and landing it directly to frame negative and validated that after I turn the vehicle off, the blower runs for exactly 30 minutes.

However, I am under the suspicion that this blower does not only run when I turn the vehicle off, but also intermittently or continuously blows while in service. Therefore, I am concerned that the cheat I have done will not allow this blower to start when called for under hot conditions.

I have removed the sensor to see if I could get a manufacture name and part number off of it, but I don’t see a manufacturers name. I have attached some pictures of the sensor and I’m hoping that some of you might know where I can get a new one. Thank you for your help!

P. S. Once the vehicle cooled down enough, I was able to drive it, so I know it was hot. Also, I validated that I have no blown fuses.

Awesome!!! I feel like i need one and will buy one from you, but are you aware of how to test it to prove that sensor is bad?

Do you know much about that circuit and when that blower is supposed to operate?

Thanks!

That is the carb. fan temperature sensor that mounts close to the manifold below the carb. The Carb. Fan is only supposed to be on after the engine is shut down if that sensor is hot enough. The fan blows on the Carb. in order to mitigate vapor lock when things are really hot, to easy restart. In the winter mine almost never turns on, but I am running headers that produce less heat. In the summer it should run on every shut down. It will run for 5 or more minutes and shut itself off when temp is good.
Hope this helps.

The 62s don’t have a carb… right? Do they still call it a carb fan?

Oh my bad, I seemed to have skipped that part at the top of your post.....I thought it looked a little different. Sorry for the bad info.

No worries. I don’t think you are wrong. It seems like the tech manual i have doesn’t have much to say about it, but it definitely looks just like the same exact fan blower.

The functioning of that carb/EFI cooling will not affect whether you engine runs or stalls. The FSM should show the temperature at which the switch closes and turns on the fan timer circuit. You can heat your sensor to test it. According to what I recall, this carb/EFI fan only runs at shutdown with the ignition off - it should not turn on while you're driving. In 9 years of driving, mine has turned on twice - so they don't run all the time. My .02 on this. Those sensors rarely go bad, in my experience.

Thank you for the info!!

Mine almost always runs when i turn it off after a ride, so maybe i had a different problem

Back to the drawing board!
