Tell me why this is a bad plan

If you had to do it all over again, would you buy new or used?

Why would you say that is a bold thing to do? I am curious.

He did not say it was a bold thing to "do". He said it was a bold "statement" because hardly anyone uses a vehicle for 15-20 years anymore. It doesn't mean that many vehicles don't last but more that people just don't stick with one thing so long anymore. Therefor, a bold statement to suggest doing so.

I've had one of my vehicles under my sole use since 2006, not quite 10 years and another gifted to a family member that I bought around the year 2000.

No, that's not what the statement means, but yours is pretty funny and spot on ;)

I had the idea of buying, in a ROW market, the exact vehicle I want....fly over to use it on long trips periodically, continuing until 25 years from now or when the laws change for when I can bring it back to the USA ;)

Fun stuff like: Defender 110 current modern model, LC 200 TDV8, G400 cdi or "Pure", etc.

Be patient and find a demo model. I paid $67k for my 2014 with 4k miles.

I liked the suggestion of getting an earlier 200 series now to bridge the gap to a late model 200 or early 300 in the future.

Is this considered a good deal?

Thanks again for all the feedback everyone. I can't deny I constantly am looking at Land Cruisers for sale. We don't need one right now, which is nice, but I won't lie, we WANT one. It's my dream overland rig (has been for at least a decade when I got into offroading (from the motorcycle scene) and I have the wife convinced it's a smart purchase (imagine those persuasion skills when talking about buying a 80K Msrp vehicle)...haha
so she is onboard and NOT holding this up, oddly enough, it's me holding up the purchasing process...

I just want to get the best value if that makes sense. I/we don't mind spending a lot of money, as long as the vehicle is worth it.
I don't think buying a toyota truck (LC, 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra etc..) with the intention of keeping it 15-20 years is a bold statement either. These things, well maintained will likely outlive us on this planet, hopefully one day our kids will drive it.

Anywho, you all have answered my question and given me a lot to think about so I thank you all. I'll go back to lurking (and driving our 07 4Runner) until we buy and I have some pictures to contribute.

If you are going to buy a vehicle you are going to keep 15-20 years, get new and enjoy to the fullest. Go for the 2016 200 and don't look back.

Meh... I saved $45,000 by buying a used 2008 with only 48k miles on it...and literally PERFECT.

And I still plan to keep it 12-15 years. For the price of one NEW Cruiser...I could have bought a SECOND 200 like this one, and still had $8k left over.
So...my take would be...grab the most perfect USED one you can find...and save a HUGE pile of cash. Then use some of that savings to build it into your dream cruiser. Think of all the amazing mods you could do by saving $45k!! To me? That's a no-brainer.

But YMMV... ;)

I don't know if I will be alive in 2016

Thus to think of a car that I may buy in 2023, wow I don't have the mental capacity for that.

For all I know we will have fully electric land cruisers by then ....

I really really really shouldn't have gone to the Toyota dealer today after work....

I went because I wanted to see the 2016 LC in person.
My local dealer has a Blue Onyx Pearl (and black one in stock and an old friend was working the sales floor today so I swung my to sniff around it and catch up with him...

Here are my impressions (currently own a 2007 4Runner and have driven many 5th Gen 4Runners and few 100 series LC):

Exterior:
From 5-10' away, it's looks freaking huge (like it's on steroids), it's impressive (just a solid look)
It's taller and wider than I thought it would be...
I really like the wheels, didn't think I would from online shopping.
The blue was sharp, but not sure it would be my first choice (darker than I thought it would be, a real deep navy blue, was parked next to a black LC200 and while distnguishable as a different color, wasn't an obvious blue). How does anyone who owns one of these things clean or wax the roof on one of these things?!!!... haha

Interior:
Impressive fit n finish in just about all aspects...
A few things caught my eye that I wasn't crazy about:
-There is virtually no functional interior storage space besides the glovebox (assuming one uses the center console as a cooler)
Likely won't ever use it as a cooler so not a deal breaker...
-The 3rd row seat is for the most part useless (only slightly more comfortable in ergonomic dimensions than the 4runner 3rd row)
Likely would remove it completely anywho...
-The 2nd row monitors annoyed the s*** out of me in terms of placement, but I understand how these might be useful with little ones in the future
Not a deal breaker but not crazy about them...
-The interior feels surprisingly small (but extremely comfortable) for how large it looks from the outside
The comfort makes up for only slightly larger ergonomic dimensions than the 4Runner

I only turned it on and we sat there idling for a few minutes (cycled thru some of the electronics, easy to navigate and intuitive)... but didn't take it for a drive (I didn't want to be tempted to start the paperwork).

In closing, the walk in the woods is going to have to wait... I see one of these beasts in my garage before 2018.
Invoicing pricing was confirmed by my friend, which makes the leap a bit more manageable when I'm ready to trade in the 4Runner.
With any luck I'll be driving the flagship in the near future...

Good luck, I bought one a year old (2014) for a 20K discount off of invoice with 25K miles and still under warranty. The discount paid for all the mods I put on. Just an option as your original poll was 3 years or new

If you like the 2016, there will be used ones available by the end of the year or early next year. Me, I didn't like the rear screens so wanted a 2013-15

Based on what you're saying and what it sounds like you would use it for, I suggest leasing one. If you love it you can buy it at the end of the lease.

Sounds like money is somewhat of a concern and this way you get a brand new LC, under warranty, and lower payments than buying it outright now.

Ultimately, you'll never be able to make a rational case for buying a new Land Cruiser unless you are going to do some serious expeditions. It's definitely a "want" car, at least here in the US.

Oh, and you're so right about the interior storage-it sucks! I have a company Yaris with far more and more useful storage space inside!

But, this is one of those vehicles where faults like that don't bother most of the 200 series owners- we find those little idiosyncrasies "charming" and just part of the character of the truck.

Good luck!

I bought a 2-year-old CPO with ~27K miles. I just couldn't afford new.

That said, I really didn't save all that much. I paid $59k. I could have gotten a new 2015 for around $72k. Was it a better deal to buy new or used? I don't know.

At first I didn't like the lack of storage in my '16 LC. But then I thought back to all the useless crap I pulled out of the center console of my '05 Tundra when I traded it in for the LC. That console was just a dumping ground for pens, Tums, sunscreen, batteries and other misc. I even found a circa 2002 iPod in there! I keep the main cabin pretty cleaned out, but the compartments not as much. So given that, for me it's probably better I have fewer packrat compartments in the LC.

The 5th Gen 4Runner without 3rd row seats has 80 cu ft behind the front row. The Land Cruiser also has 80 cu ft behind the front row. You could reclaim some room in the Land Cruiser by removing the 3rd row seats.

my wife squirrels stuff all over the place so I'm kinda excited about the surprising lack of interior storage it has to be honest... a test drive is no doubt in the future.
leasing is not in the cards. When I do it, I'm gonna do it, not temporarily tease myself... haha
I would consider used but the interest rate differences make the monthly payment damn near the same as a new one with a lower rate... so really I just need to qualify for the new one and it's a no brainer for my decision making process...

Getting close to pulling the trigger on a new LC200. Just need to close on the house in a couple months, then it's time to find the best deal on a new one.
