Yesterday, I cracked the motor open to adjust the valves and they were a little out of spec.

One thing I noticed was that the timing chain was loose. Sticking the flashlight down the drivers side of the chain the guide is gone and two groves have worn into the head/cover. Since the vehicle is new to me I'm questioning when or if the timing chain has been done.

When the valve cover was off the top end looked good, but I'd like to know the vehicle is good.

Now I'm planning to replace the timing chain and guides at a bare minimum for obvious reasons. (Considering the dual chain option) Any recommendations from people know the 22re motor better than I?

You are in luck. We just had a discussion about this awhile back. Go here, and if you have anymore questions let us know.
