So one day back in 79 or so a Colorado man named Nick decided he wanted an an off-road and drove home in his new, red FJ40. A couple of years later a little girl was born and grew up working on this truck with her father between trips to Moab and locations around Colorado. Nick was pretty involved in local rock crawling organization and modified his truck with a 350 Chevy, lockers and numerous other modifications over the years, most with the help of his youngest daughter. Unfortunately he passed away in 1999, his daughters were heading off to college and his wife sold off most of the "extras" leaving only the base vehicle. Nick's daughters moved on with their life, finishing college and getting married while the truck sat, only being driven on rare occasions, outside for 13 years.

In 2012 my wife, Nick's youngest purchased this truck from her mom with the plan of passing it down to our kids one day. Now begins the journey of trying to reverse a decade's worth of neglect and deciphering the choices Nick made over the years. We drove the truck as is for a couple of years but had a small electrical fire last year and decided to get serious about trying to bring it back to Nick's vision.

My first question is why, in the forum's opinion, would Nick have ditched the stock steering dampener for an aftermarket setup? Is there a benefit to running a system like this? Should I just buy the monroe and go back to stock?

The stock damper is small ... upgrade at the time would be to run both ... but... most stock was non functional anyway when they get added to... so an aftermarket helped

However your steering setup is not stock

It's missing a u bolt on the one end ... and it's not tight enough on the other ... you can see where it has been moving

You main rod looks a tad bent ... probably too a hit on that once or twice ... may just be the picture angle ... but does look it

Take a pic of the steering box setup

Thanks, I'll get some shots after work today of the steering setup and start looking into replacing the steering dampener and find a ubolt/tighten everything down. I'll also start looking for a mainrod I guess :worms:

Nice.
power steering conversion with an odd pitman arm? the tie rod end at the pitman arm doesn't look to have attachment point for the original damper so he went clamp on aftermarket damper. Unless I'm seeing it wrong.

We only had the bottom half of some old soft top's doors and since I need a new fiberglass top for my hardtop I ordered up a set of Metal Tech 4x4's tube doors. Super excited to get them in.

(1) The factory steering stabilizer was wiped out within 6 months of installing the larger tires, that is why guys go to the heavier duty stabilizers, to try to have some affect upon their heavier duty tires..
(2) Seeing your power steering hoses reminded my why we made the Downey power steering hose kits, see ebay #261702058064.
