Hi, I have a 2005 LN167 with a 5L-E that unfortunately had a buggered block. I purchased a 5L mechanical block and unfortunately learned the hard way that you cannot tap a hole for the crank trigger sensor and call it a day.

I am based in New Zealand and for some reason, likely due to rarity, the 5L-E engines are hard to come by and at times more expensive than the 1KZs. So I am thinking why not do a conversion since the 5L engines are a bit "asthmatic" anyways.

What I currently understand is: I will need an R-series gearbox as the KZs apparently don't bolt to a G52 bell housing, I will have to move the engine mounts forward, and I will need different diffs as the final drive will be different.

How much exactly do the mounts need to move and will a R-151 gearbox bolt right on to the existing gearbox mounts or will those need to move as well? Also how much of a pain will the wiring be? Being that both are EFI can I just replace the ECU and loom and plug it all in to my dash etc? Are there any other things, niche or major, that I will need to change or buy?

I can't really give you any useful information, other than saying that as a rule of thumb, you'll need to modify everything.

So if you go from a G transmission to an R, you'll most likely need to change mount and propshaft length. And are you sure that the R has the output flange in the sane position?

If you go from a 5L-E to a 1KZ-TE you'll most likely need all the electrics from the 1KZ-TE that are relevant to the EFI system.

I really doubt you'll find anyone with experience of this as I can't imagine anyone going to such an effort to have a 1KZ, they are not exactly Toyota's best diesel.

I think your options are to do a mechanical conversion to a 5L (though you'll lose some power and economy), stump up for a new 5L-E engine or if you're going to do a full engine and gearbox swap, get a decent direct injection non-EFI turbo diesel 4 banger. Sadly, Toyota never made such an engine to suit a Hilux, so I would look to Isuzu or Mitsubishi mainly.

I went for a 15B-T in my Land Cruiser bit would be a bit heavy for a Hilux, though it has been done.

Interested to hear what happened trying to put a crank sensor in a 5L block.
