took tha fam up to dinkey wilderness to watch the persied shower(drops) to other night. we tossed out a sheet, our 5X6X1" foam pad and a top sheet, threw the open sleeping bags on top of that and had a wonderful night under the stars. everyone was warm and comfy. Both kids agreed that it was good and fun and said they'd do it again....first time I've slept without a tent or in the back of a truck and I'm going to have a hard time going back...breaking camp was soooo easy...a bedroll set-up would streamline this even more...

I camped ▲this▲ way for years with no regrets. I did carry an additional tarp in case it started raining.:hillbilly:

yeah, we may have found a new family tradition...it was too easy to get out there...might just have to do it on the weekly...

I'm a RTT guy. I like swags too but they have the same drawbacks as a typical ground tent. Gotta find a flat spot to sleep on, if it rains hard you have a river running under the tent, it can be messy to put away after rain unless you put it down over a tarp or something to keep mud off it. I don't drink so I don't worry about my ability to get in an out of a RTT. ;)

If RTTs were not an option, I'd have a swag for sure. Much more convenient than a lot of other ground tents and they're generally quite durable.

I use a RTT on the cruiser for me and the wife, and a second on the camp trailer for the kids.

I like getting into places that most camper trailers would have a hard time getting to so I haven't considered a camper trailer for my needs.

Sleeping inside the truck is fine, but it means I have to unpack a bunch of stuff in order to get a bed set up. Same goes for a teardrop. I like the RTT for the fact that I can leave the sleeping gear inside the tent and just pop the thing open when I pull into a campsite and be in my sleeping bag in a few minutes rather than having to unpack gear and/or set up a ground tent and then have to unpack sleeping gear to use in it.

Nice set-up Box Rocket.

What I use depends on the trip I am taking and who I am taking. Even if I am solo, I use a tent that I can stand up in, usually a 10'x10' dome tent. I also pack a cot and hate sleeping on the ground. This comes from years of elk and deer camps where you are physically pushing your body daily. A comfortable camp is key to more hours and days in the field. But I do have my backpack tents for when I coyote out. But since this is a Land Cruiser Forum, I will assume we have our rigs with use. I don't spend a fortune on my tents for truck camping. Wall tents are great for hunting but not truck camping. The failure point on most tents is the zipper will wear out. I am sure that is the same with RTT. Their failure point is most likely the zipper after a few year of usage.

What I prefer is to flat bed my rig to an area I want to camp with a motor home or camper. That way I could wheel all day and return to my motorhome, camper, etc.
