Hello All:
I like the MLS HG a lot. It looks like the stuff I have seen from OEM compaines that use MLS. One thing that I did choose to use was some Hylomar around the water passages of the block side. Why only the block side, Just that I believe that this is where coolant could pass. The head needs to move and I believe that the head is softer and will create some slight impressions from the Head gasket(like a few different OEM do). Where the block is harder and will not allow the gasket to make impressions as easy.
As for the different FMU. A conversation I had had with a retailer lead me to believe that the FMU was acculmative in its action. By this I understood it to add it value of pressure to the stock one. I understood it to add a extra 48 psi underfull boost to the already 43 psi of the stock system, it did not, it only added about 48psi total. So the fuel system needed more pressure to not have detonation that Jereme was experenceing. So by going to 12 to 1 it will bump it to about 72 psi, which is where the celica fuel pump will also have it internal pressure relief(which is about 70 psi). I also did adjust the internals of the Air flow Meter, eased up the spring a bit and returned the arm of the sensor to about it orginal position. This puts the meter in almost the same area to sense it should be in idle.
Yes, I think a well designed intercooler would help a lot, it would cost more in the short term, but may aide the engine to live longer. The methonal/water injection would also help, cost less in the begining and need more service. Also cure the problem. All what the pocket book can stand.
Many different way to get to a good end product. I can not wait to see what Rick does with his Turbo. Out of any way to force air into a engine, I like turbos the best.
I am currently traveling with the family and hope to pop in and see different forums when I can. Hope all you guys are doing well. Catch you when I can. later Robbie

Doesn't the 1FZ have a knock sensor? If not or you need something more aggressive you could look at a J&S (J&S Electronics SafeGuard Indivdual Cylinder Knock Control). I'm very happy with mine (on my built 3FE which of course doesn't have a stock knock sensor). I can run more timing than stock now on 87 octane and have peace of mind. These can be kind of hard to get however, John can be hard to reach.

That aside it does sound like an intercooler would be a good investment.

Nice job!

It does have a knock sensor. The shop said the intercooler would be so far away from the intake that I'd experience tremendous lag. So, much so, that they fear I'd be unhappy and wont do it. The water/meth kit is installed and works like a champ...until I run out of water/meth.

Well done - thanks for the pics

Thanks. I appreciate it. One of these days, I'll add pics of that as well.

Hello 24,

first off, excellent job on the rebuild and thanks for sharing. I have a spare 1FZ-FE sitting in the garage and I am thinking about rebuilding it, but in such a way that I get the most performance out of it without SC or turbo - bloody European law does not provide for this option when it's not researched by the manufacturer.

Where do you get the information on what geometry to use for porting the head, and would that be usefull when not SC-ing ? In time I might SC it anyway though and see what happens... Too big of a funfactor. Does the Supra fuelpump make a difference when not SC-ing ? I have to ask, since nobody here has ever seen this engine and they are stumped when I start asking questions. Not a common engine around here. Your thread is really good reading.

Cheers,
Niels
