Summit smoothies wheels...

Interesting timing to find new posts on this thread. I have been working on a 16" wheel option for some time. I have found a couple but none are great and I really don't know if I want to become a wheel vendor.

So far, Wheel Vintiques is my front runner because their smoothie wheel looks close to factory and can be custom ordered in 3.5" back spacing. It only comes standard in 4" though. If I plunk down a big chunk of change, I can get a pile of 3.5" wheels in 16x7 or 16x8 in the 3.5 spacing at vendor pricing and sell them for the same as the 4" back spaced wheels that are from Summit (or at least close I think). That is TBD for me still.

The next must have for this to go forward is a way to affix the oem hub cap. We are lucky they are still available and pretty cheap. The problem is they have the wrong size ring on back for the smoothie wheel. I think it may be possible to jig up an oem hub cap, laser cut the back, and tig weld it to a new ring so it fits on a smoothie wheel. I have one on a wheel now and it looks pretty good. It actually comes out with a bit of overhang on the back bit it still looks good.

I will keep working on trying to make a cost effective fit. I have no idea how long oem caps will be available, so that potential problem exists too.

I am bent on putting 16's on my 40 so I will make one set for sure!

@fj55-100 are those 15” or 16” hoops, did you use rivet centers? I have a set of rivet wheels in the shed to do this too ...

Also bought a 16x8 smoothie for my spare, will post a pic when I get the tire mounted.

15 s , i first tryed a riveted center but after machining the center out i did not like the material left to weld to . hoops are from summit racing , they have 16s as well

@dogfishlake You would be a godsend if you could figure this out. One thing I've read is that the 16" Wheel Vintiques w/ 4" backspace will fit a stock FJ40... the extra diameter gives you just enough room to clear the TREs. Assuming that's true, you wouldn't have to get into the game of selling wheels. Just custom hubcaps!

While doing my research on this, I found this to be a really common need. How many guys on here are running 33x10.50's on their stock steelies? I would bet a lot of those guys would switch wheels. I have no hard data, but lots of people want a wider wheel with a stock look, and can't stomach the cost of buying stock steelies or Racer65's 16x5.5's and having them widened by a place like Stockton. When you add up the shipping costs/etc, you end up with some absurdly expensive wheels.

16x7, stock hubcaps, and 255/85/R16's are my dream scenario.

I saw the info about the 4" wheel fitting too, but I need to bolt up the one I have to make sure. When I do I will post up pass/fail pics either way. The City Racer wheels are a big investment, I know, but for a totally stock looking wheel they are sweet looking 16's. The Wheel VIntiques choice will look "nearly stock" because they don't have the little window in the wheel centers. I'm hoping the potential lower cost just gives people another option.

I bought Vintiques Smoothies - 15" x 6". They won't fit my FJ40 unless I add a spacer.

I've read that others are having good luck with the 16" Smoothies.

This is awesome!

My 15” x 8” with 4” BS smoothies fit with no spacers, but I believe it’s because I’m running different steering arms

There is an old thread about the 16" wheel with 4" b.s. clearing the tie rod end. I'll try to find it.

Timely that this thread is getting some attention.
I just ordered a wheel vintiques smoothie 16x7 with 3.5" custom backspacing for 147 dollars shipped.
The standard finish is primer, but I opted for a bare metal finish as I will get them powdercoated locally.
The center hole is 4.25", they are lug centric, and will be shipped in 5 to 7 days directly from wheel vintiques.
Assuming it fits and looks right I will order four more.
Planning on mounting up 255/85R16 maxxis bighorms with an OME lift.

Ill post a photo for reference when the wheel arrives.

Did you special order them for Wheel Vintiques or Summit racing?

I've been trying to figure out a way to get the hubcaps on the smoothie wheel. That is the only thing holding me back from buying a set.

I'd like to see how the 3.5" b.s. works compared to the 4" (assuming the 4" clears) on an 8" rim, the 4" would tuck the wheel more, but maybe too much? I will try to remember to throw one om my bfg 285's in the Hundy tomorrow and drop it off to get mounted. Maybe I will quick powder coat the wheel too beforehand. I think I have some RAL 7037 kicking around.

I ordered directly from Wheel Vintiques over the phone. The part number that you start with is 12-670604, thats a 16x7 with 4" bs for $98. The 3.5 backspacing is a custom option which they charge 25 dollars extra per wheel. The remaining 24 dollars per wheel is shipping.

Also I should mention that I'm not sure about adding hubcap clips to this wheel. I plan on running them bare.

I know that the 4" bs would work, but would likely rub on the drag link (minitruck PS) while turning left at compression.

The oem clip set up won't work because the diameter of the Wheel Vintiques wheel is too small. The only way to pull it off is to modify a new Toyota cap to fit the smaller snap in mount.

@WildernessRimFab , I'm looking forward to seeing you new wheels on your rig. Post up some pics when you're done!

Custom clips would work in a vintage Chevy type wheel because the Toyota cap will fit in the recessed area around the wheel stud zone. That area is too small on the Vintiques wheel and the Toyota cap lands right on the high spot. I do have one of my wire products customers (that I powder coat for) working on a reproduction wheel clip for the oem wheel, but not sure about that one.
