Suggestions for kill switch in 62

Y'know, I have that same switch, attached to a pair of long, thick leads that end in battery terminals type thingies that go to the battery ground...
I found it at a BMW dealership.
Apparently all BMW come across the pond with one of these....
The dealer pulls it off and throws it away.
Or they used to anyway. I've had it a few years now.
I grabbed a few, gave most away, kept one for myself.
Maybe drop by your local dealership, see what you can find if you ask nicely?




I have one of these for the "ignition switch" for my VW Baja project:

A crew chief that I used to work with had one with the key in the front fender well behind a debris baffle. Anytime we were going to be out of eyesight of the truck while in Baja he pulled that 'key.'

Simply interrupting one of the grounds for EFI bits will disable that portion of the system. I'd look to see if the injectors have a ground on the engine. Some do, others don't.
Before the days of OE clutch pedal starter disable switches I put such a switch on the brake pedal of a friend's hot rod. It also had a toggle switch in the circuit hidden under the B&M shifter cover.

4) Do not turn the switch off with the engine running and you won't have a problem. The alternator protector circuit is intended to keep from voltage spiking the alternator's diodes and popping them. If you have friends that are likely to think turning it off is funny then put the switch somewhere not obvious.

Just out of curiosity, what would happen if the switch was turn off while the engine was running? When buying cable, what gauge is appropriate for this purpose?

The voltage surge can blow up the diodes in the rectifier.

#4 cable would be the smallest that I'd go. #2 or single ought would be preferred.
 
Here's a random question. Could this red-handled switch also be used on a 24-volt diesel system so that it disables the whole electrical system? And if so, how would it be installed?
 
Hey all, figured I'd bring this thread back rather than start a new one since it touches on my question.

I'm wanting to kill my battery for storage purposes and the fact that a PO installed a number of add ons with the V8 swap and I'm tired of chasing electrical gremlins. Will this switch also work to kill the whole battery/system so nothing can drain the battery? How would I wire it? I'm no electrical wiz and it seems previous discussion has been on wiring to certain systems such a s fuel pump, EFI, etc. Thanks for the help!
 
In order to kill all possible drains, one would have to interrupt the main battery cable(s). That would take a large switch capable of high continuous loads. I'd personally opt to just remove battery terminals for storage.

I have been pulling the terminals but even if it sits a week in this cold it's dead so I was trying to do something that's a little more convenient.
 
Either of the switches that I linked could be put in the ground cable as I previously described. Turning the switch off would kill everything, including the memory of any electronics. For long term storage consider a maintainer type trickle charger if there is power available where it will be stored. Or one that is solar powered if not. Depending on your draws the charger may be able to keep the battery up in spite of those draws, which would make the switch unnecessary.

Got it. Thanks for verifying. I have a battery tender on it but I am looking for something when there is not power available. Week long climbing trip with the truck at the trailhead, truck damn well better start when my tired smelly self arrives...

Why not take it to a professional auto electric shop? Have someone who knows what they are doing look at it... bet it can get fixed in a matter of a few hours labour.

Just a thougt...But I think backwards sometimes....

Now offering a plug and play FJ62 kill switch solution.

Easy to install with minimal electrical knowledge and simple tools.

Currently in development for 40/60 series as well.

 
I used to watch the repo shows when I had cable (Lizard Lick Towing). They just back up to it, hook up and take off.
Was at a stereo/security shop and asked about a kill switch. They said they'd happily do so if I wanted but mentioned these days cars are mainly stolen by electronically cloning a key (modern cars - Dodge Challenger was mentioned specifically) or they tow it.
