how do your rigs with no sway bars drive on the open road? i thought theyd be dangerous and handle like pigs?

I realize this is an old post, but just for posterity's sake:

I removed the front sway bar from my '84 pickup and noticed zero difference in on-road handling. This is with some sort of aftermarket lift spring in the front.

I removed the front sway from my '85 FJ60 and noticed a negligible increase in body roll. I could *just barely* notice a difference. If someone unfamiliar with that particular truck got in and drove it, they would never know the difference. This is with 2.5" OME suspension.

I had the same result on my 85 60 with the OME lift. Ran w/o sway, no problems except more likely to rub tires.
But the Shackle reversal changed that and I got a signifigant roll.
So I put the bar back on with MAFs extended links and it is better.

OME w/32's. sways attached. I wish the back would stuff like the front!

OME and bald 32's. No swaybar. I probably could have gone a couple inches higher, as both rear tires were firmly planted.

here's one.

4" alcans, long shackles and 35's.

Yes, it rubs.

At that point you should just go SOA. You won't get a ton more lift and it won't rub anymore:D

Very impressive none the less.

Yeah, maybe you're right...

I like the heavy springs in the rear (it's sprung for 6.5k lbs loaded) and it seems like it'd be tough to get the same specs in a flatter spring.

Also, at the same ride height with bumps allowing the same up travel seems like it's still rub. I guess the advantage is the down travel you get with a SOA, and soft flexy springs. I bet it'll be SOA some day. Maybe when the 40 is built as a nice daily driver...

This obstacle is kind of a cheater though, it pushes the suspension hard, so it makes my stiff springs flex.

Listen to it rub:

I stopped midway to ask my GF to snap some photos of where it was rubbing in the front and rear so I can trim.

That is a sick video. Honestly, I'd cut the fenders where it rubs before considering going SOA. It seems to perform well as it is! It takes a lot of tuning to get a SOA truck to flex well, lots. With time it can be done but if you have the time invested in the SUA suspension, then continue to work it.

You're sprung for 7.5k lbs? Holy crap man, that's a ton of weight. A solid 3k lbs over the stock weight. What have you got in there?

For reference, I think the 3/4t chevy 63" springs would support that much weight in a SOA situation.

Sorry meant to say 6500lbs. for some reason the 7 popped into my head... little off there. Fixed my post.

It has the big fuel tank and heavy bumpers, fridge, tools ect. Cruising around town its just shy of 6klbs.

Yeah , Agree, fender cutting is next on the list.. I like the way it works now too much to go changing it a whole lot.

Nice......very nice

Yeah, I was eyeballing your rear in the video (don't get the wrong idea :D ) and noticed you had the big tank. How much have you beat on that thing? I was talking to MAF last week about one, and they seem pretty stout. I was worried about how low they hang...

Nice video!

I haven't really hit it on anything... for the most part it's pretty tucked in there.

So i guess I can't say.

But yeah, it is more tucked than it looks I think..

Bomar, now that you are closer you'll have to come wheel with us in the desert!

Ok not my cruisers but I took these pics of them just today. one is jeffsclan and the other is bilko. pretty good flex I do say so myself

About the removed sway bars. Glad to hear some of you saying you don't feel the difference, or you almost don't feel it. A few months ago I installed a complete 4" OME heavy dury Dakar lift kit wit reversal shackle from Man-A-Fre, and the first time I had some real wheel travel, both sway bar bolts (were included in the 4"kit) broke, because they were to short. I guess:confused:. The funny thing was that I didn't really feel the difference, except for a little more roll. I already bought new stuff, but now I don't know if I'm gonna use it.

Didn't take more "extreme" pics. This was just to measure something.

I had my '60 up on the forklift at Metal Tech so LT could do some work on my bumpstops and crossmember so my tires and front driveshaft would stop rubbing. Here are some crappy phone pics of it up on the lift. The top of the rear tire is definitely over 5 feet in the air. The front springs were starting to invert. I have a 5" Alcan lift with 35" tires. The front sway bar was ripped off during the Alaska Cruiser Trek and I never fixed it.

LT also made this awesome skid plate for my t-case. I'll put pictures of that up in my ROTM thread.
