Disclaimer : I'm an idiot. When I adjusted my valves the other day I turned the engine with the crankshaft pulley bolt. Unfortunately I turned the bolt counter clockwise. When I drove the truck today the bolt vibrated loose allowing the crankshaft pulley to separate from the block. Oil went everywhere! Luckily I didn't lose the bolt as it fell into the frame. I put the bolt back and tightened it as much as I could but naturally the crank is turning over. So what is the secret to getting the torque without the SST? Is there an SST? What's your secret to keeping the crank from moving while tightening the bolt? Is there anything else I should check after this debacle? And for the record, when turning the crank turn it in the tighten direction! The FSM didn't have much help.

Engage the transmission in high gear and block the tires. You can also use a rope or cable to do a reverse double wrap around the pulley and anchor it to the frame. I have used this method to both tighten and loosen crank pulleys on a lot of different cars over the years. John

I do pretty much the same as Inkpot. If the crank pulley is torqued to the correct setting, it should never come loose by casually turning it in either direction. It should be on there at 116 foot pounds/157 nm, at least for a 1990 22RE. There is an SST listed in the FSM for the 1990 22RE.

Torque spec per the FSM in approx. 80 ftlb. It is 11-13 Kg-m. It doesn't list any SST for putting it back together. Is it possible I damaged anything, like the front seal, due to this mistake? I will try the 5th gear method when I get home.

When you put it back together, don't forget to check the drive spline of the oil pump to make sure its there. I use a vise grip pulley holder to hold the pulley while I torque it down.

I know you already found a way to do it but just figured I would chime in. I've always just used. A rachet and hitit with a bfh. Never have had any problems
