Laces out baby!!

Got the wheels bolted up. Holy balls what a difference it made. Death wobble is all but gone. Got it up to about 40 riding around the block. We are gonna take a little test drive later to see.

Before/During/After

May put the center caps on the back when I pull the wheels back off to double check the spacers in a few miles.

I dont know what the BS is on the steel wheels but between them and those swampers, the rear tires were close to the springs and didn't leave much room for flexing. I knew the BS on the racelines was 4.5" and in my reading it seemed that 3.5" was what most folks aimed for, and then Elbert offered up the spidertrax he pulled off his 60 and I snatched them up. The bolted up and put the tires at around 3" net.

I cleaned the stock studs and put a dab of red loctite on them before torquing them to 85 ft-lbs.

Then bolted up the new wheels. Check out the difference.

I think the Saginaw box has some play in it still, so some adjustment on that is on the list, but next will probably be getting the rear belts in and sorting out the new cage. After that is done I am going to swap a set of front fenders from my stash on so the front looks more like a proper 40.

Tie-rod ends and an alignment will be coming soon as well.

And going to start doing some research on springs. These springs have little-to-no flex in them and I'd like a little better ride (I know it's a 40, but I think I can get a little better out of it)

But for now, I'm calling it a win since I can get over 30 without fearing for my life or the lives of those riding with me.

Took the 4D for an 80 mile road trip today and no noticible wobble. Pleased with how well it did. Gonna have to adjust the idle down a little, but other than that, everything did really well.

I’m going to have to do the same thing I guess. We’re those 36x12.50 sx’s?

You interested in parting ways with those old TSLs? I might be interested if they are 15s.

They are indeed 15's and they are indeed for sale. I had another guy ask about them, but if he decides to go another direction, I will let you know. Priced them to him at $700 for the set of 5 wheels and tires. They are an older set of tires and if they are mostly trail only, should be good to go, not sure how many road miles they have left in them. They do have some cracking on the sidewalls of 4 of them, but the spare looks nearly new. I will post up some pictures of them in a few.

Here are a few pics.

Sidewall cracking, this is probably the worst of it, and 4 of the 5 have some like this on them.

Tread depth, lots left (Lincoln who...)

Here are the 4 I pulled off the 4D, the other one is stashed elsewhere.

I'll take the second spot in line. They would be trail only so I'm not too concerned with the condition. I will be in Nashville between 6/28 and 6/30 if it works out and I could pick them up. Not sure you're interested in keeping them, but I would flip the wheels as I don't need them.

remember when anything over 35s were awesome? My how things have changed.

@tgreco doby really have much need for the wheels, so would rather them go as a set. You are second, and I will let you know when I hear back from him.

@TeddyBoy yeah, 35s were all I thought id ever need, now I'm probably going to go to 37s minimum when the 80 gets new tires, 4Ds if I can convince Erin that we "need" them

Tires are yours if you want. I will stack them in the barn for you. Hit me up when time gets closer and we can work out meeting up, or you can swing by the farm and get them.

Great! I’ve got your digits but it’ll likely be either Friday 6/29 or Saturday 6/30 that I get them if that’s ok. Let me know if you have a preference.

For anyone paying attention, there will likely be some 36x13.5x15 iroks hitting the market so stay tuned.

Had a clanking noise coming from the front. found the front passenger side shock had eaten both the upper and lower bushings, so need some new ones. Gonna order a set of Bilsteins for all 4 corners. I also have 2 sets of front fenders in the pile, so I am going to work on swapping a set of fenders from the "Pile" onto it and I also think I am going to put the split hood from the '70 on it to to give it little more character. I also need to troubleshoot the ARB front. compressor won't come on and so the locker won't engage.

So the to-do currently includes:
  • New Shocks
  • Rebuild front axle
  • sort out the front ARB
  • Swap the front fenders and hood
  • Install new Tie-rod ends

Also looking at saving up for a set of mastercraft Rubicon seats to match the rear bench.

Sounds like a plan, man! I like the Billstein shocks, for the money they are great. I got mine from 4WP, but maybe there are better deals out there! I had the same clinking noise from the old Ranchos sitting on the shock mount with chewed up bushings...

Took the 40 for a spin around the farm today. Rewound the winch cable after I figured out how to power it up.

So good news, bad news...

Good news, I figured out what was wrong with the ARB

Bad news, I need a new compressor...

So now to decide if I should just do a replacement ARB unit, or if I want to look into an OBA setup for the 40.

I did some reading last night and have decided that unlike most of my mis-adventures, I am not going to overcomplicate this one. i will get a CKSA12 ordered and just swap it out and got from there. I can cross the OBA bridge down the line.

You might want to consider the ckma12 and inflator kit - has no trouble airing my 315s up from 12-15psi to 30+ and is not much bigger....
