Ran across this thread searching for the answer to my question regarding FJ62 knuckles versus mini-truck knuckles. Stripped the threads on one of the caliper bolt holes on my FJ62 steering knuckle and happen to have a spare set of mini-truck knuckles. First I'll try a helicoil, but may just replace the knuckle. Luckily I've got a bunch of nitrile gloves and paper towels laying around.

Another example of great tech info here on MUD.

I just finished checking the parts diagram and numbers on Toyota Overstock for '70, '79 and '84 and the shims all have the same part numbers. I was looking at the Marlin Crawler knuckle kits which include their inner axle seal as well as wheel bearings etc and thought I would go with that kit and then buy the smaller shims for one knuckle. Confusing as clearly the dimensions are different.

Toyota overstock is not a very reliable way to check part numbers like that fwiw

We (Cruiser Outfitters) stock shim packs if you need spares, much less $$$ than buying from Toyota. Of course all our kits ship with the appropriate shims too :D

I will be adding pictures of steering arms to this or in another thread....I just did not have them in a pile when I started this.

Yes.

1979-1990 40/55/60/62/70 series steering knuckles/spindles/calipers all interchange.

From 08/75-07/80 the rotors and wheel bearing hubs used six 10mm bolts to retain the rotor to the wheel bearing hub, opposed to the 08/80-1990 rotors being retained to the wheel bearing hub by the six wheel studs in addition to two 10mm bolts.

Calipers all interchange through this era of the Land Cruiser; 08/75-1990

40/55 steering arms, while they have the same 'large' pattern where they attach to the steering knuckle, use a smaller tie rod end, so consequently, the hole/taper is smaller on these arms. The 60/62/70 used the same arms with the larger hole for the tie rod ends.

Here are pictures of the larger bolt pattern knuckles using the 12MM stud found on 01/79 and later 40/60/62 and Mini trucks to 07/85:

( So this means if you have a large pattern steering knuckle from a mini truck, and have done a front disc conversion on your Land Cruiser using FJ 60, or FJ62 or 40 series with the large pattern, you can use a mini truck steering knuckle as they are interchangeable. The only thing is you may want to check and make sure the replacement knuckle is centered on the axle so that you do not end up having gear oil rain out of your steering knuckles)

Morning Poser:
Troy is my name and 71 fj40 is my game. I believe a 79 yr up, axle conv to disc from the reading I'll been doing here has large bolt pattern with a 4 piston two large two small caliper.
Have a knuckle rebuild kit question.
I jumped the gun on ordering kit and ordered one for the 71 rebuild, knuckle no wheel bearings, but now realize that this will not work, or I'm I wrong. I believe I need a kit for a 79+-rebuild knuckle kit with wheel bearings. Coolerman pointed me in your direction. I admit I haven't read all of your post on this subject but any help or direction, links, would be awesome.
Thanks Troy

Hi mate, you´made my day better between foggy information about FJ40-FJ60, i have 1980 HJ45, i wanna put FJ60 steering knuckle, but i ear mention about that larger pattern, now i only need to try what happens with my 1980 hj45. Regards!

Hey Guysm
I am getting ready to do a knuckle rebuild on the 78 FJ40. I've watched a few videos of people doing the rebuild. None of them mention the need to do an alignment after the job.

If your bearings are really worn out, the rebuild could affect toe in, but that's easy enough to check before and after. That's really the only thing that you can adjust with the knuckles anyway (caster is adjusted but putting angled shims between the axle and leaf spring perch).

Thank you! I'm hoping to get this done this weekend.

@Poser I am trying to untangle a mini truck conversion that I only learned about after I ordered the 5 piece tie rod end replacement and found that nothing lined up. I now have factory correct tie rod and relay rod from Mark and am struggling with the connections to the Steering Knuckle Arms.

Not sure if I need different Tie Rod Ends (that'll fit my arms) or swap out the arms for OEM. If I go that route, will there be a problem with the front disk brakes.
