Amayama came through for me. I just got the package when I got home from work a bit ago. I still plan on comparing it to the Gates kit soon.

I don’t know how many Amayama has left, all their website says is quantity is “>1”, which means they could have 2 or they could have 100. Or maybe they put that there and only have zero.

@OGBeno FYI.
Another Amayama win. Late model kit has arrived

Is this one of the different seals you were talking about?

No. I did away with these seals, O ring, white teflon seal and metal spacer...

Steering Box lower seal 1 em.jpg

...And replaced them with this seal.

Steering Box lower seal 2 em.jpg

That lower seal ('83-87 FJ60), is a:

NOK AG8907E (OEM) Good luck finding it in USA

Toyota 90312-32002 (cheap).

223210 - Federal Mogul / Timken / National, etc....

The Gates one pictured above looks like it's for an early box (< '83) or FJ40 PS box.

Be careful with the white PTFE seals, they tear very easily.

If someone wants to experiment, I found a kit with the same PN from Daihatsu on Impex's site. I found an eBay ad for a similar kit for the daihatsu and the seals look identical, same number, sizes, etc. I almost bought one to play with but really have no need for it since I still have 2 OEM toyota kits left for my early box. No idea if it will actually work but may be worth the $50 to find out.

Maybe @OGBeno knows more about it.

If anyone does buy one to experiment with, post the results!

Daihatsu is a Toyota company. I would see no reason why this wouldn't work if it is an OEM kit from Daihatsu. I wouldn't buy this aftermarket--IE: That eBay link above. Daihatsu's are mainly for the SE Asian market.... IE: There is already massive counterfeit parts operations there. So, I'd buy OEM Daihatsu part. I do not know what the 3 digit suffixes are used to indicate in the Daihatsu part world, though, so, :meh:

Did anyone else figure out how to replace the brass inserts that are in the kit? I could not figure out how to get the old brass pieces out, tried a pick inserted from both the inside of the assembly and from the outside and they didn't want to budge. They look fine so I think I am going to be okay if that is the only part I don't end up replacing.

Now I need to figure out how to set the lash distance correct with the adjustment screw once this goes back together and gets repainted. TOYODA
Remove them with a stud extractor, one of those LH thread things for extracting snapped bolt studs.

Install with a smooth brass drift and light hammer taps.

Check the FSM for the correct pre-load setting procedure and don't ignore the thrust clearance of the adjuster bolt. Not hard to replace and reset the staked nut with a home-made SST.

It has been about a year since I did this repair by rebuilding this steering box so a few things I am trying to remember are gone from my memory. I used a youtube video to guide the process completely and skipped all of the tolerance checks in the FSM, perhaps making a mistake in doing so now that I look back. My rebuild has been great so far, with some occasional fluid coming out of the adjustor nut at the top which I think I have taken care of by tightenting that adjustor screw down.

I did not do the pre-load in the FSM and now looking at this, maybe I should take things back apart to do it right. I DID ignore the thrust clearance of the adjuster bolt. Can you talk about more about replacing the staked nut with a home made SST? I could do this as part of a process to inspect the seals, make sure I didn't harm a teflon one in the rebuild.

@BurntToast What did that late model 04445-60030 seal kit set you back?
IMG_4079.jpeg

A quick search shows TPD (who I don't advocate) shows it's $167. What did this kit come with that the earlier -60020 kit didn't that would justify the huge price difference from the earlier kit?

Sorry, it slipped my mind to reply to this. Have a look at post #146 in my build thread: Builds - Last of the BJs: 1989 GEN BJ60 restoration, 15B-T swap - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/last-of-the-bjs-1989-gen-bj60-restoration-15b-t-swap.1297034/post-15211148

It picks up again at around Post #178, showing setting of the pre-load on the end housing bearing, and on the new adjuster bolt.
