Converting an early one-piece column to a later two-piece column-and-box arrangement [retaining the original column inside the cab] and with the parts over 1000km away I'm struggling to determine the u-joint I need to buy.

Does anyone know the size and spline count of the 40 box where it mates to the column? If it's any help it should be the same size as 60 and 80 series boxes. They're usually measured like so:

Diameter/Spline Count

17mm/36 splines
.750"/48 splines

Cheers!

I’ve got my original box on the shelf from my 77 and can check this afternoon if you don’t get a hit

Yes please sir. I'm not sure if the diameter measurement is in lieu of or includes the splines - could you perhaps get both?

Mine still had the original rag joint on it. Looks like 32mm and 36 splines. My box is the original from my 08/77. Here’s some photos.

Hope it helps

@77mustard40 thanks mate! Pic #2 - is that 17mm which is equal to .760"? I worked it out differently.

Well 17mm / 25.4mm per inch would be .67”

Yeah that's what I thought! :) Was wondering which measurement to use as I'm not so used to callipers. I'll go 17mm. Thanks mate!

Mine reads 17.433 mm. I'm unable to count splines with it in place with the rag joint on.
btw, .760" converts to 19.304 mm.

Thanks fellas. Lol, so now we've got 17mm, 17.41mm, 17.433mm and .760". At least we can agree on 36 splines :D

We'll, since the difference between 17.433 mm and 17.41 mm is less than onone pers thousandth of an inch, you could justifiably consider them to bebe validated as equal.

Yeah, just being facetious :D

Thanks @snaggletto I'll check em out.
